Sophomore third
baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) doubled
home freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
from second base with one out in the bottom of the
eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and give the
Cerritos College baseball team a 5-4 South Coast
Conference home win over East Los Angeles College on
Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Falcons
record to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in SCC play, while the
Huskies dropped to 6-11 and 1-2. Cerritos will now
travel to Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday for a
2:00 p.m. conference game.
Trailing 4-3
heading into the bottom of the eighth inning,
freshman pinch-hitter
Lemuel
Johnson (Gahr HS) slapped a
base hit up the middle to lead off. After freshman
outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) advanced
Johnson to second base with a sacrifice bunt,
McEleney drilled a double down the left field line
to tie the game. Huskies starter Fernando Garcia
(0-3) was relieved in favor of Chris Machado, who
quickly surrendered a double down the right field
line by Gaylord, which drove in McEleney with the
game-winning run.
Freshman relief
pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS), who
came on in relief of sophomore pitcher
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS) in the
eighth inning, pitched a perfect ninth inning for
his third win of the year against one loss.
With the game
going back and forth the entire way, Cerritos scored
a solo run in the first inning on a pair of wild
pitches by Garcia, which allowed McEleney to score
after he doubled with one out. The Huskies scored
single runs in the second and third inning, with one
coming on a
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) wild
pitch, while Jose Nava doubled in the other run in
the third.. The Falcons tied the game in the fourth
after Gaylord reached first on a bunt single to lead
off, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS). Freshman outfielder
Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS)
then picked up an RBI single, scoring Gaylord.
After the Huskies
took a 3-2 lead, Cerritos tied the game on a suicide
squeeze bunt by sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS), which scored Terry. With
one out, Terry drew a walk and then attempted to
take second base when a pitch got away from East LA
catcher Paul Franco. But Franco's throw was wild and
Terry advanced to third base.
All three Falcon
pitchers worked out of bases loaded jams at
different parts of the game, with Severns getting
out of the third inning by getting a ground ball out
to end the inning. As for Blanchette, he induced a
pop up in the fourth to end a Huskies rally, while
Villalobos came on with runners at first and third
with two outs in the eighth before hitting the first
batter to loaded the bases. He then got a ground
ball to end the threat.
