Clinging
to a tight 2-0 lead through the first six
innings of their South Coast Conference game
at Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday
afternoon, the Cerritos College baseball
team scored eight runs over the next three
innings to post a 10-0 win. The victory
improves the team's record to 9-6 overall
and 3-1 in SCC play, while the Mounties
dropped to 12-6 and 2-1. The Falcons will
now host Pasadena City College at noon on
Saturday in another conference game.
Through
the first six innings, Cerritos had seven
hits but only two runs to show for it. The
game opened up in the seventh inning when
the team scored three runs, while they added
another in the eighth and four more in the
ninth to put the game away. The Falcons
finished the game with 19 hits.
In the
seventh, freshman outfielder
Jake Mayoral (Rocklin HS)
led off with a double and advanced to third
base on a single by freshman shortstop
Max McEleney (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who took second base on
the throw to third. Sophomore third baseman
Brian Gaylord (La Mirada HS)
made it a 4-0 Falcon lead with a two-run
single, while he moved to second base on a
wild pitch. Freshman designated hitter
Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS)
followed with an RBI single to close out the
scoring in the inning.
McEleney
drove in freshman outfielder
Lemuel Johnson (Gahr HS)
with a triple in the eighth inning, while
the team slapped out six hits in their
four-run ninth inning. Terry, freshman
pinch-hitter
Josh Bryan (La Mirada HS)
and sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes (Bellflower HS)
each singled to lead off the ninth inning,
while Terry went on to score on an error on
the hit by Hayes. Bryan then scored on a
passed ball before sophomore outfielder
David Neff (John Glenn HS)
doubled home Hayes. The final run was scored
when sophomore second baseman
Brandon Pesante (La Mirada
HS) singled in Neff.
Sophomore
starting pitcher
George Sanchez (Gahr HS)
pitched the first eight innings and
surrendered just three hits, while striking
out seven and walking just one batter. He
saw the Mounties get runners as far as
second base in three different innings, but
did not allow any to score and improved his
record to 4-1. Sophomore
Steven Blanchette (Schurr
HS) pitched the ninth innings and
struck out two of the four batters he faced.
At the
plate, the Falcons finished with a
season-high 19 hits, as Mayoral, McEleney,
Terry, Johnson and Pesante all had three
hits.
