The Cerritos
College baseball team found themselves overmatched
by El Camino College pitcher Kyle Petter on Friday
afternoon in a South Coast Conference baseball game
that was originally scheduled for Thursday
afternoon. After scoring the game's opening run, the
Falcons allowed 12 unanswered runs, while Petter
struck out 13 batters, and Cerritos suffered a 12-1
defeat. The loss dropped the Falcons to 9-7 overall
and 3-2 in SCC play, while the Warriors improved to
12-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the SCC. Cerritos will get
a chance to rebound when they host Pasadena City
College at noon on Saturday.
In the bottom of
the first inning, freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) led off
with a base hit and stole second base. After
freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Millikan HS)
advanced Mayoral to third base with a ground out,
sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drove
him in with a sacrifice fly.
But that would be
all the offense Cerritos would mount on the day, as
Petter (2-0) and relief pitcher Keith Famularo
scattered six hits, with sophomore outfielder
David Neff (John Glenn HS) the
only Falcon to get two hits.
Freshman pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS) was
victimized by his defense behind him, as the Falcons
committed six errors on the day. It started in the
third inning when a pair of fielding errors by
sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) opened
the door for three runs to score. It was more of the
same in the fifth inning, as Gaylord and McEleney
each committed an error, which produced two Warrior
runs.
Villalobos (3-2)
did last six innings and allowed five runs (one
earned) and seven hits, while he struck out seven
and didn't walk a batter. The bullpen was unable to
shut down El Camino, as four Falcon pitchers
surrendered seven runs and seven hits the rest of
the way.
El Camino catcher
Taylor Gelbrich (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and
outfielder Joe Morgan (3-for-5, 3 RBI) led a 14-hit
attack.
