Sophomore
infielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drove
in sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) with a
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to
give the Cerritos College baseball team an 11-10
non-conference win over Chaffey College at Kincaid
Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win snapped a
two-game losing streak for the Falcons, who are now
10-8 on the year, while the Panthers dropped to
11-7. Cerritos will resume South Coast Conference
play on Thursday when they face Long Beach City
College at 2:30 p.m. at Kincaid Field.
In the bottom of
the ninth, Pesante drew a lead-of walk and stole
second base, the eighth steal of the game for the
Falcons. After an out was recorded, freshman
outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) grounded
a ball to Chaffey third baseman Willie Holmes, who
threw the ball over first baseman Greg Allen's head,
putting runners at second and third. Freshman
shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Millikan HS)
was walked intentionally to load the bases for
Gaylord. Down 1-2 in the count, Gaylord sent an
Xavier DeLaCruz pitch into shallow left field, where
Chris Lemus made the catch and threw home to try and
get Pesante. But Pesante was able to get under the
tag of catcher Sean Simpson for the winning run.
After the Falcons
scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning
for a 7-1 lead, it looked as though it would be an
easy day. Leading 9-1 after five innings, freshman
starting pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS) was
removed in favor of freshman
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS), who
went on to allow seven runs on six hits in 2/3
innings of work. He surrendered five straight hits
and walked two batters before being taken out in
favor of freshman
Leonard
Shyrock (Paloma Valley HS),
who eventually got out of the inning. Shyrock went
on to give up two unearned runs in the seventh
inning before freshman
Frank
Gutierrez (Gahr HS) and
Blanchette finished up the game.
At the plate,
Cerritos had five extra base hits, including a rare
inside-the-park home run from freshman designated
hitter
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) in the fourth inning
that gave the Falcons an 8-1 lead. But the Panthers
were able to match the Falcons hit-for-hit, as
Holmes clubbed a solo home run in the top of the
first inning and finished with three hits, two RBI
and he scored three times.
Sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) went 4-for-5 with an RBI,
while Terry (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs) also had a good
day at the plate. McEleney, freshman outfielder
Lemuel Johnson (double, triple) and
freshman third baseman
Steve
Hernandez (Downey HS) also had
two hits for Cerritos. The Panthers were led by
Holmes, JJ Costantino (3-for-5, 2 RBI), Gerry
Hernandez (3-for-5) and Christopher Sulcer (2-for-2,
2 runs) who all had multiple hits.
