Usually when a
team allows 10 runs in an inning, it's almost
assumed that the team has gotten beat pretty bad.
That wasn't the case for the Cerritos College
baseball in Thursday's South Coast Conference game
against Long Beach City College at Kincaid Field. As
it turned out, both teams had 10-run innings, with
the Falcons prevailing, 18-16 in which the two teams
scored the second most combined runs in a game on
Cerritos history. The record of 36 runs was
scored in a 26-10 win over Glendale in 1958 and in a
25-11 Cerritos win over College of the Canyons in
1989. The Falcons (11-8 overall, 4-3 SCC) will now
travel to Griffith Park to face Los Angeles City
College in an SCC game on Saturday.
Trailing 5-2
heading into the bottom of the fifth inning,
Cerritos put a 10-spot on the board, as sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) drilled a bases loaded
triple to round out the scoring in the stanza. Along
the way, freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) and
sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) each
had two-run extra-base hits.
Sophomore starting
pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) was leading
14-6 going into the seventh inning and recorded the
first two outs to start the inning. He surrendered a
two-out base hit and stepped aside for sophomore
relief pitcher
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS), who
went on to allow six hits and a hit batter before he
was removed. Freshman
Frank
Gutierrez (Gahr HS) got the
third not, but not before allowing a three-run home
run to Jared Smith, which gave the Vikings a 16-14
lead. Freshman
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
pitched the final two innings of the game to earn
the win.
The Falcons
regained the lead for good when they saw three more
runs score in the seventh inning. Neff led off with
a base hit and was moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by freshman outfielder
Lemuel
Johnson (Gahr HS). After
Pesante was hit by a pitch and the second out was
recorded, sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) singled home Neff, while
Mayoral followed by doubling in the game-winning
runs. Cerritos added an insurance run in the ninth
on a base hit by Neff.
On the day, Neff
went 4-for-6 with six RBI, while Mayoral drove in
five, while going 2-for-4 at the plate. McEleney was
4-for-6 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI,
while Gaylord was 4-for-6 and Hayes had three hits
while driving in a pair.
