The Cerritos
College baseball team was looking at the positive
side of a 5-0 score against Los Angeles City College
in a South Coast Conference game on Saturday
afternoon at Griffith Park. But just as they were
settling in for the win, the Cubs exploded for seven
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and the
Falcons were left scrambling to come up with enough
runs to win the game. The Cerritos offense responded
with three runs in the top of the eighth inning for
an 8-7 victory. The Falcons (12-8 overall, 5-3 SCC)
will now host the same Cubs at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday
at Kincaid Field.
After they fell
behind 7-5, Cerritos got right to it in the eighth
with sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) leading off with a walk and
stealing second base. After an out was recorded,
freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
tripled home Hayes, while sophomore third baseman
Brian Gaylord (La Mirada HS)
tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored
McEleney.
Knowing the game
was still to be won, freshman designated hitter
Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS)
kept the inning alive with a triple of his own
before sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) drove in the eventual
winning run with a base hit.
Freshman pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS), who
came on in relief of freshman starter
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) in the
sixth inning, pitched four innings to earn the win.
Villalobos helped get the team out of the seven-run
Cub sixth inning and then retired 12 of the final 13
batters he faced.
On the day,
Gaylord went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and
sacrifice fly, while Neff (3-for-4, RBI) and
McEleney (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) also had good days.
Additionally, sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) and
freshman first baseman
Josh Bryan
(La Mirada HS) each added two hits.
