In all three of
their meetings with ECC Compton Center this season,
the Cerritos College baseball team dug themselves a
hole they just couldn't crawl out of. On Thursday,
the Tartars opened up a 4-0 lead after the first two
innings and posted a 7-4 South Coast Conference win
over the Falcons. The loss drops Cerritos to 12-10
overall and 5-5 in SCC play, while Compton improved
to 10-12 and 6-4. The team will look to snap out of
their slump on Saturday when they host Los Angeles
Harbor College at noon.
Although they were
down, 4-0, the Falcons did score three in the top of
the third inning, but could not stop Compton from
matching that run total in the fourth inning. In the
third, sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) led off with a base hit,
but was cut down on a fielder's choice by freshman
outfielder
Marcus
Stevens (Mayfair HS). Freshman
outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) followed
with a base hit before freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) drove in Stevens with a single. With Mayoral
advancing to third on the single, McEleney stole
second base before sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drove
in the second run with an infield out. Freshman
designated hitter
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) closed out the scoring
with an RBI single.
Freshman starting
pitcher
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) was
saddled with the loss after going the first 7 2/3
innings. He was in a groove at times, striking out
seven, but he walked three and saw three of the
seven runs that scored, come across unearned.
On the day,
freshman first baseman
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS) had his first
three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while
Mayoral, McEleney and Terry all had two hits.
