For a program that
has been known for its pitching and defense, the
Cerritos College baseball team has found itself in
more wild games that anyone can recall. In the last
two weeks, the Falcons have turned in 11-10, 18-16
and on Tuesday, a 17-15 win. Cerritos, who trailed
10-2 after three innings against Los Angeles Harbor,
rebounded to post their 17-15 South Coast Conference
victory to improve to 14-10 on the year and 7-5 in
SCC play. The team will now travel to Cal State Los
Angeles for a 2:30 p.m. conference game against East
Los Angeles College on Wednesday.
The comeback
started with a six-run fifth inning, while the
Falcons added a pair of runs in the seventh and five
more in the ninth to take a 17-12 lead. The Seahawks
did mount a ninth-inning comeback by scoring three
times, but freshman
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
finally got the last out of the game.
In the sixth,
freshman outfielder
Adam
Peacock (Mayfair HS) picked up
his first collegiate RBI with a base hit, while
freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) followed
with a run-scoring single. With the bases loaded,
sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drew a
walk before freshman designated hitter
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) doubled in two more.
Freshman first
baseman
Josh Bryan
(La Mirada HS), who came on as a defensive
replacement in the sixth inning, drove in a pair
with a double in the seventh inning and followed
that with a two-run triple in the eighth inning. The
eighth started when Mayoral (4-for-5, 2 runs, RBI)
was hit by a pitch. After freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
advanced Mayoral with a sacrifice bunt, Gaylord
(3-for-5, 4 runs, 2 RBI) drove him in with a base
hit. Terry (4-for-6, 4 RBI) then tripled home
Gaylord, while a walk to sophomore outfielder
David Neff (John Glenn HS) set
up the two-run triple by Bryan (2-for-2, 4 RBI).
Sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) brought
in Terry with a sacrifice fly to round out the
scoring.
Sophomore starting
pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) lasted just
1 2/3 innings, while the Falcon defense gave the
Seahawks six errors in the first four innings to
help them take a sizable lead. Four relief pitchers
finished up the game for Cerritos, with sophomore
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS), who
went 3 1/3 innings picking up the win.
