As the architect
of the field named in his honor, Cerritos College
assistant baseball coach
Wally Kincaid is
getting a first-hand look at the purpose for his
vision. The Falcons, looking to get back into the
hunt for the South Coast Conference title, recorded
three triples hit into the cavernous outfield gaps,
including a one-out three-base hit by sophomore
third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) in the
bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman designated
hitter
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS), who tripled his first
two times up, singled home Gaylord for the
game-winning run in a 7-6 Falcon win over East Los
Angeles College on Saturday afternoon at Kincaid
Field.
With the win,
Cerritos is now 8-6 in conference action and 15-11
overall, while the Huskies dropped to 7-7 and 12-16.
The Falcons will now host Mt. San Antonio College at
2:30 p.m. in another SCC contest. The Mounties, who
entered the day at 7-4, are one game against of
Cerritos in the standings.
Leading 6-3 after
five inning, the Falcons saw the Huskies put three
runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning
against freshman starting pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS). He
was able to leave runners at second and third base
to end the inning and then worked through the eighth
inning. Freshman
Efren
Gutierrez (Gahr HS), who
pitched the ninth inning, earned his first win of
the season.
Heading into the
bottom of the ninth inning, Cerritos had been
looking to get their bats hot again after collecting
eight hits through the first three innings. After
chasing starting pitcher Chris Machado, the Falcons
could only muster two singles against relief pitcher
Raul Regaldo in his 4 1/3 innings of work.
Cerritos had a
chance to break the game open in the bottom of the
seventh inning, if not for one of the weirdest plays
ever seen in a game. With the bases loaded and one
out, Regaldo's pitch got past ELAC catcher Jose
Nava. Gaylord, who was the runner at third base,
attempted to come home but slipped and had to go
back to third. At the same time, sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) had taken off from second
base and freshman first baseman
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS) tried to advance to
second base. When the runners saw Gaylord had
slipped, they both tried to get back to their base,
but Eaton was caught in a rundown. At that time,
Gaylord took off for home, but was thrown out, while
Eaton was ruled to have run out of the base path and
was called out, which ended the inning.
In the ninth,
Gaylord drilled the first offering from Daniel
Vargas (2-1) that rolled to the right-center field
wall for a triple. Assuming that the Huskies were
going to intentionally walk Terry, he was surprised
to see a fastball right over the plate, and he
quickly drilled to 2-0 pitch into left-center field
for the game-winning run.
On the day, Terry
went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while freshman
outfielder
Adam
Peacock (La Mirada HS) had
three hits and an RBI, with Gaylord (2-for-4 2 runs)
and Neff (2-for-4, RBI) each getting multiple hits.
Terry now has eight triples on the season and is
closing in on the school record of 13, set by
Ron Ewart in 1985. For the Huskies,
Paul Franco went 3-for-4, while Tony Andrade and
Basilio Martinez each added two hits.
