Faced with several
bases loaded situations in their South Coast
Conference baseball game against Mt. San Antonio
College at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon,
Cerritos College was up to the challenge each time.
The Falcons, who won the game 5-3, saw the Mounties
leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning, while a
great throw by sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) ended a threat in the
eighth inning. The victory improves the Falcons
record to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in SCC play, while
Mt. SAC dropped to 18-11 and 8-5. The two will meet
up on Thursday in a 6:00 p.m. game at Mt. San
Antonio.
Leading 5-3 in the
top of the sixth inning, freshman pitcher
Skye Severns (Claremont
HS) walked two and allowed a single to load the
bases before he got J.C. Torres to fly out to end
the threat. In the eighth inning, sophomore relief
pitcher
Steven Blanchette
(Schurr HS) allowed a pair of walks before
he was replaced by sophomore
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS), who walked
the first batter he faced. But on a fly out by Jon
Peters, Neff threw a strike to sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes (Bellflower HS),
who tagged Michael Newell out attempting to score
from third base.
At the plate,
Cerritos rebounded from a 2-0 deficit by scoring
four runs in the bottom of the third inning off Doug
Wogee (1-1). Sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) led off
with a double before a base hit by Hayes put runners
at first and third. Freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) loaded
the bases with a bunt hit before sophomore shortstop
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
drove in a run with a walk. Gaylord followed with a
run-scoring single, while a pair of sacrifice flies
by freshman outfielder
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) and Neff drove in the
other two runs.
Severns (2-4) went
6 2/3 innings to pick up the win, as he allowed
three runs (one earned) and seven hits, while
striking out two. He escaped the second inning by
allowing only two runs when Newell bounded back to
Severns with one out and the bases loaded. Severns
forced the runner at the plate, while Newell was
called for runner's interference to end the stanza.
A pair of Falcon errors, a walk and a hit batter
helped the Mounties along in the inning.
On the day, Hayes
went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Gaylord
(2-for-4, RBI) and Neff (1-for-3, 2 RBI) also had
good games. Ruben Salazar led the Mounties with two
hits.
