After turning in
one of the most amazing hitting seasons in recent
memory, Cerritos College second baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) was named the South
Coast Conference Player of the Year. Terry, who will
be named to the All-State team as a designated
hitter, batted .417 with a school-record 10 triples,
stole 8-of-9 bases and also led the team in RBI
(34), total bases (68) and slugging percentage
(.708) His RBI total tied for the second best in
school history, with the record of 39 being set in
1989 by Brian Hunter. Terry led a
group of four players to be named to the first team,
as the Falcons finished the SCC in second place and
will find out who they will face in the first round
of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on
Sunday.
Joining Terry on
the 1st Team were sophomore pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS), freshman
pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS) and
sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS). Sanchez, who was a 1st
Team selection at designated hitter last season,
went 5-2 on the mound with one save and a 3.20 ERA.
He appeared in 59 innings and struck out 52 batters.
As for Villalobos, he went 6-3 on the mound and led
the team with 59.1 innings pitched and posted a
team-leading 3.03 ERA. At the plate, Neff led the
Falcons with a .460 batting average, which is the
sixth best in school history. He also had 46 hits,
which was one shy of tying the school record of 47,
set by Carlos Olea in 1995. Neff
also stole seven bases.
Sophomore third
baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) was one
of two Cerritos players to be selected to the 2nd Team
after he hit .349 in conference play and drove in 23
he runs. Also seeing time at first base, Gaylord was
also third in the team with 37 hits and led the
squad with 30 runs scored. Joining Gaylord was
freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS), who batted .327
with 15 RBI and led the team with 12 stolen bases.
He also played flawless defense and had four
outfield assists.
A trio of players
garnered Honorable Mention recognition, led by
freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS),
along with sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) and freshman designated
hitter
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS). McEleney was third on
the team with a .354 batting average and also led
the team with seven doubles, while he drove in 14
runs. Hayes, who did a masterful job of handling a
young pitching staff, contributed a .333 batting
average, while driving in 11 runs and leading the
team with 15 walks. Eaton finished the conference
season with a .294 average with five doubles and 10
