Sophomore third baseman Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) drew
a two-out, bases loaded walk to drive in the
game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth
inning, as the Cerritos College baseball team
opened their 2010 season with a 6-5
non-conference win at Kincaid Field on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (1-0) are slated to host
Glendale College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
After falling
behind 4-0 to the Hornets (0-1), Cerritos slowly
worked their way back in the game before scoring
three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning
to take a 5-4 lead. Mayoral tied the game with a
base hit, driving in sophomore Adam
Peacock (La Mirada HS),
who singled and stole second base to start the
rally. But it was a two-run single by freshman
designated hitter Tim Soonthorngarun
(John Glenn HS) that gave the Falcons
their first lead of the game.
Fullerton responded with a single run in the top
of the eighth inning when a throwing error by
sophomore shortstop
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) allowed George Flores to score from
second base with two outs. Sophomore Tucker
Woods (La Mirada HS) came
in in relief to record the final out and posted
the win. Freshman
KevinHendrix
(Mayfair HS) pitched the ninth inning
to earn the save.
The Falcons started their rally in the fourth
inning on a lead-off home run by sophomore
second baseman Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS),
who also drove in a run with a bases loaded walk
in the fifth inning.
Freshman Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS)
started the game and lasted until the top of the
eighth inning. He surrendered four runs (three
earned) and struck out eight batters. But it was
some wildness that allowed the Hornets to take
the early lead. A wild pitch allowed one run to
score, while JP LaMunyon delivered a two-run
single with two outs in the second inning.
