After fighting back from a first-inning 5-0
deficit in a non-conference game at Chaffey
College on Thursday afternoon, the Cerritos
College baseball team finally tied the game at
8-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning
after scoring twice in the top of the stanza.
However, the Panthers (1-2) pushed a run across
the plate without even getting a hit to post a
9-8 win. The Falcons (1-2) will look to break a
two-game losing streak when they travel to
Saddleback College on Friday in a 1:00 p.m.
non-conference game.
Freshman closer
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) came
on to extend the game in the bottom of the
ninth, but hit Jeremy Weber to lead off the
inning. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the
runner, Weber moved to third base on a passed
ball and finally came home on another passed
ball with the bases loaded and one out.
The Falcons worked their way back into the game
slowly and tied the contest with a pair of runs
in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman
outfielder
Matt
Palmer (Gahr HS) opened
the stanza by getting hit by a pitch and then
moved to second base on a passed ball with two
outs. After sophomore second baseman
Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS)
was intentionally walked, sophomore designated
hitter
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS)
reached base on an error by Panther third
baseman Matthew Anderson, allowing Palmer to
score. Freshman outfielder
Hector
Gomez (John Glenn HS) then
tied the game with a base hit.
On the day, Eaton went 3-for-4 at the plate with
three RBI, while Gomez was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Palmer scored three times, while freshman
catcher
Nick Gosano (Lakewood HS)
drove in a pair or runs. On the mound, sophomore
Skye Severns (Claremont HS)
was the second straight Falcon pitcher in as
many days to struggle early in the game and was
done after four innings. He allowed seven runs,
while sophomore
Josh
Bryan (La Mirada HS) came
on to toss three innings and allowed just one
run. Freshman
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS)
pitched a perfect eighth inning, while striking
out two.
