For the second time in a week, the Cerritos
College baseball team was in position to win a
game in the final inning. But just like what
happened at Chaffey College six days ago, the
Falcons this time saw College of the Canyons end
the game with a walk-off grand slam to post an
11-7 non-conference win over Cerritos on
Thursday. Leading 7-6 heading into the bottom of
the ninth inning, the Falcons allowed five runs,
including a grand slam off sophomore ace
Chris Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
by Jeremy Weber to end the game. Cerritos (2-4)
will try to rebound on Friday at 2:00 p.m. when
they host Irvine Valley College.
Things seemed to be well in hand for the
Falcons, as they led 7-6 going into the ninth
inning. But, with one out, sophomore third
baseman
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS)
committed an error, followed by a double off
sophomore pitcher
Tucker
Woods (La Mirada HS).
Villalobos came in and walked the next two
batters before surrendering the grand slam to
Weber.
Cerritos took a 4-1 lead after two innings when
freshman first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn
HS) and sophomore second baseman
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) led off with back-to-back base hits.
With runners on second and third, sophomore
outfielder
Adam
Peacock (La Mirada HS)
reached base on an error, allowing one run to
score, while sophomore outfielder
Michael Stowers (Bishop O'Dowd
HS/Cal State Dominguez Hills) clubbed a
three-run home run.
On the day, Stowers went 2-for-4 with three RBI,
while Soonthorngarun, McEleney and Peacock each
added a pair of hits.
