Cerritos College freshman pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) gave
his team exactly what they needed - a quality
start. Leading 5-3 with two outs in the top of
the seventh inning, Quezada gave way to his
bullpen, who went on to surrender five runs (two
earned), as the Falcons dropped their fifth game
in a row, an 8-6 non-conference decision to
Golden West College on Sunday afternoon.
Cerritos (2-7) will now travel to Fullerton
College on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m.
non-conference game.
The Falcons took a 5-2 lead heading into the
seventh inning, thanks in part to four Rustler
errors, with three coming from pitcher Race Parmenter
in the same inning. In the first inning,
freshman first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn
HS) doubled home two runs to give the team
a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, sophomore third baseman
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) led
off with a base hit. Freshman designated hitter
Daniel Luera (Mary Star of the
Sea HS) attempted to bunt Mayoral over, but
popped the ball up. Parmenter dropped the pop-up
and threw wildly to second base, giving the
Falcons runners at first and second base.
Freshman catcher
Vince
Perry (Cypress HS)
followed with a bunt, with Parmenter throwing
the ball wildly to first base, which allowed
Mayoral to score. Sophomore second baseman
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) singled in the second run of the inning
after sophomore pinch-runner
Michael Stowers (Bishop O'Dowd
HS/Cal State Dominguez Hills) was picked
off when he thought a suicide squeeze was in
order.
Quezada, who went 6 2/3 inning, struck out eight
batters and walked two before coming out. He
surrendered three runs (one earned) and was
replaced by sophomore
Tucker
Woods (La Mirada HS) in
the seventh inning with runners on first and
second base. Woods threw just one pitch to get
out of the inning.
From that point forward, the Falcon bullpen was
ineffective, as Woods allowed a pair of singles
in the eighth inning before coming out in favor
of
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS). He
was called for a balk while facing his first
batter, while he uncorked a wild pitch when
walking Chris Devanski, which allowed a run to
score. After an infield single by A.J. Bayles,
pinch-hitter Billy Silvestri was safe when
freshman shortstop
Ralph
Davis (Long Beach Millikan HS)
booted his ground ball. A bases loaded walk by
freshman
Andrew Reis (Lakewood
HS) against Michael Syrett accounted for
the go-head run.
The Rustlers added two more runs in the ninth
inning, thanks to a pair of hits and another
infield error by the Falcons. Cerritos did score
once in the ninth inning against Blake Cestr,
who earned the save, but left a runner on base.
On the day, McEleney went 3-for-5, while
Soonthorngarun, Mayoral and sophomore
Adam
Peacock (La Mirada HS)
each had two hits. Bayus led the Rustlers by
going 3-for-5 with two RBI, with John Spirk and
Jordan Tripp also collecting a pair of hits.
