Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the eighth
inning, the Cerritos College baseball team
scored five times and then added another run in
the ninth, while they held off Long Beach City
College in the bottom of the ninth inning for an
8-6 South Coast Conference win. The victory by
the Falcons was their third in a row and
improved their season record to 5-7, while they
are 1-0 in conference play. They will look to
keep their winning streak going on Thursday at
2:00 p.m. when they host Mt. San Antonio
College.
Even with an 8-3 lead, Cerritos saw the Vikings
(3-10, 0-1) score three times in the bottom of
the ninth inning and leave a runner in scoring
position to end the game. Sophomore starting
pitcher
Chris Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
was looking for a complete-game win, but when he
allowed three hits to start the ninth inning, he
was replaced by freshman
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS).
After allowing a run-scoring double and
sacrifice fly, Rodriguez recorded the final two
outs to earn his second save of the season,
while Villalobos picked up the win to improve to
2-1 on the year.
In the five-run eighth inning, sophomore
designated hitter
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS)
drew a one-out walk, following a base hit from
freshman first baseman
Tim Soonthangarun (John Glenn
HS). Sophomore third baseman
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS)
followed with an RBI single and after sophomore
outfielder
Adam
Peacock (La Mirada HS) was
hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. The
Falcons scored another run after freshman
catcher
Nick Gosano (Lakewood HS)
was hit by a pitch to force in a run and then
sophomore
Michael Stowers (Bishop O'Dowd
HS/Cal State Dominguez Hills) grounded out
to force in another run. Freshman shortstop
Ralph
Davis (Long Beach Millikan HS)
and sophomore second baseman
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) closed out the scoring with RBI
singles.
Gosano (2-for-2, 2 RBI) added an RBI in the
ninth inning, while McEleney, Soonthangarun,
Davis and freshman outfielder
Matt
Palmer (Gahr HS) all had
two hits for the Falcons.
