06.15.11 - Dave Serrano named
head coach at Tennessee
Former
Cerritos College baseball player, assistant coach
and head coach Dave Serrano has
been named the head coach at the University of
Tennessee, and will be introduced to the school on
Thursday. Serrano, who played for the Falcons
(1984-85), also served as an assistant coach
(1988-90, 92-94) and head coach (1991), has spent
the last four years as the head coach at Cal State
Fullerton.
"After an overwhelming 24 hours of events, I have
made the decision to leave a great program at Cal
State Fullerton to take on the challenge of
returning the University of Tennessee to a spot
among the nation's elite," Serrano said on the
University of Tennessee website. "While this
decision was not an easy one, it makes it a little
easier to say yes when you have an entire family
completely in support for you. We hope to be proud
and active members of the Knoxville community and
will work hard to give Volunteer fans a baseball
team that they can cheer on for years to come.".
Back in 1995-96, Serrano was hired as an assistant
coach for the Volunteers after working on the Falcon
staff for seven seasons. In his first season with
Tennessee, he was part of a team that advanced to
the College World Series and featured MLB players
Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey. In his two years with
the Vols, the team posted a 97-36 record.
But Serrano's life-long goal was to coach at Cal
State Fullerton and was brought in after the 1996
season to coach with longtime friend George
Horton, another former Cerritos player and
head coach. Serrano was an assistant under Horton
from 1997-2004 until he was hired as the head coach
at UC Irvine. He led the Anteaters to the College
World Series in 2007 before being named the head
coach at Cal State Fullerton. Serrano, who owns a
lifetime coaching record of 289-139-1, is a veteran
of seven College World Series and is one of just 11
coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha...[more]
06.09.11 - Brian Gaylord signs; Joe Terry drafted
 Former
Cerritos College baseball player Brian Gaylord,
who just completed his senior year at Lewis & Clark
(ID) State College, has signed a free agent contract
with the Kansas City Royals, while another former
Falcon, Joe Terry, was drafted in the 30th
Round by the Cincinnati Reds. Gaylord, the son of
Cerritos head coach Ken Gaylord, will report
to instructional camp, while Terry will decide
whether or not he will return to Cal State Fullerton
for his senior year.
Gaylord, who led the Warriors with 12 home runs
and 60 RBI, batted .279 on the year as the
team's starting first baseman. On the year,
Lewis & Clark posted a 38-17 record and advanced
to the NAIA College World Series. In his junior
season, Gaylord finished fourth on the team with
a .357 batting average with eight home runs and
38 RBI, while the team played in the NAIA
College World Series. With the Falcons, Gaylord
was a 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference
selection as a sophomore after he batted .325.
05.14.11 - Offense runs out of
gas in 11-8 loss
Not
long after eliminating Santa Barbara City College,
5-3 at Fullerton College on Saturday morning, the
Cerritos College baseball team found themselves back
at Santa Ana College in an elimination game against
Orange Coast College. Both teams took a chance on
getting a win by using their bullpens instead of a
traditional starting pitcher in hopes of saving one
of their top three starters for the championship
round. Neither starters lasted very long, and after
the Falcons (24-16) took an 8-5 lead after the third
inning, their offense seemed to run out of gas, as
the team dropped an 11-8 decision, which ended their
season.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Nick Quezada (Mayfair HS), who led the team with a 9-4 record and 3.11 ERA was held out of the game against the Pirates and would have been the team's starting pitcher if they had gotten past Orange Coast. Freshman
Cesar Chavez (Mayfair HS), who had appeared in 18 games, all in relief, got the starting assignment after posting a save against the Vaqueros in the morning. But he was hit hard by Orange Coast and allowed three runs and four hits in the first inning, while he had four bases stolen on him. Chavez was removed after allowing a walk and hit to start the second inning in favor of freshman
Jacob Bell (Burroughs HS), who only threw one inning in a starting role against Santa Ana on Friday...[more]
05.14.11 - Falcon stay alive with
5-3 win
The Cerritos College baseball
team stayed alive in their quest to advance to the
State Tournament, as they defeated Santa Barbara
City College, 5-3 at Fullerton College on Saturday
morning. The Falcons (24-15) will now play the loser
of the Santa Ana-Orange Coast game at 3:00 p.m. at
Santa Ana. A win would send the team to the Super
Regional finals on Sunday, while a loss will end
their season
Sophomore pitcher
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS)
threw 144 pitches and lasted into the ninth inning to
earn the win, while freshman pitcher
Cesar Chavez
(Cerritos HS) came on to record the final to outs
to earn his fifth save of the year. The Falcons scored
four times in the first inning off Vaquero ace Chris
Joyce, who also pitched into the ninth inning. Santa
Barbara City loaded the bases in the ninth inning after
scoring an unearned run. But Chavez got Eli Michaels to
pop up for the third out and end the game....[more]
05.13.11 - Cerritos opens Super
Regional with 12-3 loss
When Cerritos College
baseball head coach
Ken
Gaylord decided to start freshman
left-handed
Jacob Bell
(Burroughs HS) in their Southern California
Super Regional game against Santa Ana College at
Don Sneddon Field on Friday, he based his decision
on how well Bell through against the Dons in their
previous meeting on April 22 when he tossed 1 2/3
innings of relief in a 5-4 win. But Bell lasted only
one inning, with Santa Ana pounding out 22 hits in a
12-3 win. The loss by Cerritos (23-15) knocks them
into the losers bracket, where they must now win
four games over the next two days to advance to the
state tournament. The Falcons will face Santa
Barbara City College at Fullerton College at 10:00
a.m. after the Vaqueros dropped a 9-8, 10-inning
decision to Orange Coast College.
The Dons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the
first when Andy Peterson scored on a sacrifice fly
by Gary Apelian. Peterson singled to open the inning and
advanced to third on a failed pickoff throw by Bell.
Santa Ana then led, 2-0 before the Falcons cut their
lead in half with a single run in the top of the
fourth inning...[more]
05.12.11 - Baseball games to be
broadcast online
Unable to attend the Cerritos College baseball games
this weekend? Well, with OEC-LiveSports.com, you
won't have to miss a game. Calling the games this
weekend will be Mike Zepeda and Jeff Stoyanoff, who
have been a staple at various Orange Empire
Conference baseball games this season. With this

College, the duo will be calling the action for
every game this weekend - except for Game 3, which
will be played at Fullerton College on Saturday

05.09.11 - Game times set for
baseball and softball Super Regional
With both the Cerritos College baseball and softball
teams advancing to their respective Super Regional
this weekend, the game times have been finalized for
both sports. The Falcon baseball team (23-14), who
swept past Cuesta College in the first round, will
open on Friday at 11:00 a.m. against Santa Ana
College on their home field. The Dons (26-13) needed
three games to eliminate San Diego Mesa College over
the weekend. As for the Cerritos softball team
(32-10), they will face Palomar College (26-11) at
8:00 p.m. at Mt. San Antonio College. Both the
Falcons, who defeated Bakersfield College, and the
Comets, who eliminated Long Beach City College, won
twice on Sunday to avoid elimination...[more]
05.07.11 - Cerritos sent to Santa
Ana for Super Regional
After
dispatching Cuesta College in two games during their
Southern California Regional Playoff First Round
series, the Cerritos College baseball team will now
travel to Santa Ana College for the Super Regional.
The Super Regional is a four-team,
double-elimination tournament, with the winner
advancing to the State Championships. With several
upsets during the first round - most notably
#2-seeded Chaffey College being eliminated - several
teams moved up in the ranking, with the #3-seeded
Dons taking over hosting duties. The second game of
the tournament will pit Cerritos (23-14) against
Santa Ana on Friday at 4:00 p.m., with #3-seeded
Orange Coast College facing #6-seeded Santa Barbara
City College playing at 12:00 p.m. in the early
game. The California Community College Athletic
Association stipulates that game times the first day
are to be played at noon and 4:00 p.m. on the first
day, but the times could be adjusted if all coaches
agree to change them...[more]
05.07.11 - Falcons advance to
Super Regional with sweep
Whenever the
Cerritos College baseball team needed a win, they
turned to sophomore pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS), who
usually pitched well enough to keep the team in
position to win. He did just that on Saturday, as
the Falcons pulled out a 4-3 win over Cuesta College
at Kincaid Field to win their Southern California
Regional Playoff series, 2-0 and advance to the
Super Regional. The series win by Cerritos was their
first since 2003. The Super Regional will be a
four-team, double-elimination tournament with the
winner advancing to the State Championships. The
location of the tournament, as well as the other
three teams involved will be decided at the
conclusion of all eight first round series.
After allowing the #9-seeded Cougars (22-16) to tie
the game, 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Quezada (9-4) 12 of the final 14 batters he faced
and recorded six of his 10 strikeouts during that
period.
The Falcons (23-14) broke the tie in the top of the eighth
inning when sophomore outfielder
Hector
Gomez (John Glenn HS) laced a
ball into right field for what appeared to be a
lead-off base hit. But Cuesta center fielder Davey
Schultz slipped while charging the ball and had to
chase it down as it rolled to the wall, with Gomez
ending up with a triple. Sophomore first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn HS)
then drive home Gomez with the eventual game-winning
run with a sacrifice fly off starting pitcher John
Tiedemann (8-3), who took the loss...[more]
05.06.11 - Cerritos takes 1-0
series lead with 9-4 win
Looking for their
first post-season series win since 2003, the
Cerritos College baseball team took a 1-0 lead in
their best-of-three series against Cuesta College
with a 9-4 win at Kincaid Field on Friday. The
Falcons (22-14) will look to close out the First
Round Series of the Southern California Regional
Playoffs on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Game 2 of the
series.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the
Falcons were able to respond every time the Cougars
(22-15) looked to tie the game. After Cuesta scored
once in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk,
Cerritos fired back with three runs in the bottom of
the stanza. Once again, Cuesta scored three times in
the top of the sixth to cut their deficit to 5-4,
but the Falcons responded with four runs of their
own in the bottom of the sixth to close out the
scoring...[more]

Playoffs, which will begin on Friday. The Falcons
(21-14), who will host a best-of-three series, will

04.28.11 - Falcons clinch
conference championship
On the strength of
their 4-3 win over Mt. San Antonio College at
Kincaid Field on Thursday, the Cerritos College
baseball team has clinched the
South Coast Conference championship. It marks the
first conference title for the Falcons (21-13) since
2008 and it's their 31st conference championship in
school history. Cerritos, who will be seeded no
lower than eighth for winning the conference
title, will find out where they will be seeded for
the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Sunday.
The top 14 teams get a bye and avoid having
to compete the play-in game, which will consist of
seeds 15-18 and takes place on Tuesday. The
remaining 16 teams advance to the first round,
which is a best-of-three series that will be played
May 6-7. Cerritos and Mt. San Antonio will finish up
the regular season with a 2:30 p.m. game tomorrow at
Mt. SAC.
"I'm extremely happy for the sophomores," said head
coach
Ken Gaylord, who played on two state
championship teams (1973-74) with the Falcons.
"These guys stuck it out after a really rough year
last season. Most of these guys have ever won
anything in their lives. But they fought through
everything, became a very tight-knit group and I'm
really very happy for them."..[more]

10-inning win at Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday.

04.22.11 - Third win in a row
huge for Falcons
After spotting
Santa Ana College a 4-0 lead, thanks in part to a
pair of errors in the first inning that accounted
for two runs, the Cerritos College baseball team
bounced back and came away with a 5-4 non-conference
win on Friday at Kincaid Field. The win by the
Falcons was their third non-conference win in as
many days, which will strengthen their power ranking
against teams ranked higher than they are, as they
head into the final week of the South Coast
Conference season. With three games remaining this
week against Mt. San Antonio College, Cerritos is in
a tie for first place with ECC Compton Center.
Earlier in the week, Cerritos defeated Fresno City
College (5-1) and Merced College (5-4).
Down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth
inning, the Falcons pushed a pair of runs across the
plate against starting pitcher Ben Burke. In the
sixth, they chased Burke, and relief pitcher Ruben Orosco
(6-4) hurt his cause with a throwing error that
scored the eventual game-winning run. In the fifth,
sophomore catcher
Vince Perry
(Cypress HS) drew a walk to start the
inning, followed by a base hit from freshman
outfielder
Bubby Rossman (La Habra HS). A
sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS)
advanced the runners before an RBI ground out by
sophomore second baseman
Vince Vega
(Monrovia HS/Rio Hondo College) and an RBI
base hit by sophomore catcher
Nick Gosano (Lakewood HS)
accounted for two runs...[more]
04.21.11 - Lead holds up in 5-4
decision
The
Cerritos College baseball team took advantage of an
error that scored the eventual game-winning run, as
they posted a 5-4 non-conference win over Merced
College at Allan Hancock College on Thursday. The
win was the second in as many days for the Falcons
(18-13), who will host second-ranked Santa Ana
College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Kincaid Field.
After allowing the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (23-11)
two runs in the top of the first inning, the
Falcons responded with single runs in the first and
third innings. They took the lead for good in the
fifth inning when freshman shortstop
Chris Hefner (El Dorado HS) reached base on a fielder's choice with one out. A pair of singles by sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez (John Glenn HS) and sophomore first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn HS), which drove in Hefner, broke a 2-2 tie. After freshman outfielder
Bubby Rossman (La Habra HS) was hit by a pitch, sophomore catcher
Vince Perry (Cypress HS) grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Gomez. But on the play, Merced shortstop Tynan Pedretti threw the ball away trying to double up Perry, which allowed another run to score...[more]
04.20.11 - Cerritos posts big win
over Fresno City
In
the hunt to win their first South Coast Conference
championship since 2008, the Cerritos College
baseball team also knows they need some quality wins
in order to get ranked higher for the playoffs. The
Falcons (17-13), who suffered a lop-sided loss on
Monday, came back with a 5-1 non-conference win over
Fresno City College (17-15) in the Allan Hancock
Tournament at Cuesta College on Wednesday. Cerritos,
ranked #25 in the state, took a 5-0 lead behind
sophomore pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) to defeat the
#15-ranked Rams. The Falcons will now face Merced
College at 11:00 a.m. at Allan Hancock College on
Thursday.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the second inning
when both sophomore catcher
Vince Perry (Cypress HS) and sophomore designated hitter
Vince Vega (Monrovia HS/Rio Hondo College) were each hit by a pitch with one out. The bases were loaded when sophomore third baseman
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) reached on an error. Sophomore outfielder
Lorenzo Brunetti (Community Harvest HS/Los Angeles City College) was credited with an RBI when he grounded into a fielder's choice...[more]
04.18.11 - Chaffey jumps on
Falcons early in 13-2 loss
Riding a
season-long five-game winning streak into their
non-conference make-up game against Chaffey College
on Monday, the Cerritos College baseball coaching
staff had decided that they would approach this game
with a "pitcher by committee" format because the
team has four games slated for the week. As it
turned out, the Falcons used five different pitchers
because the Panthers hammered Cerritos, 13-2, which
included scoring six times in the bottom of the
first inning. The Falcons (16-13) will now head to
Central California to face Fresno City College at
11:00 a.m. at Cuesta College on Wednesday and then
play Merced College at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at
Allan Hancock College...[more]

pitcher added to pro staff
Bobby
Post, who was a pitcher for the Cerritos
College baseball team from 1992-93, has been named
the pitching coach for the Calgary Vipers, an
independent team in the North American League. He
spent the last two years as the pitching coach of
the Sioux City Explorers of the Independent American
Association after spending three seasons as the
pitching coach at Barstow College. Post is also a
graduate of Gahr High School.
While a member of the Falcon baseball team, Post was
a 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference pitcher as a
freshman, as the team won the conference
championship. He had a hand in six shutouts as a
relief pitcher for Cerritos and earned a scholarship
to play at the University of Nevada. In his two
seasons with the Wolfpack, Post went 18-5. He then
spent five years pitching professionally with the
Independent Northern League with Sioux Falls and
Sioux City before finishing his career in Taiwan
with an overall record of 43-18.
04.16.11 - Falcons toss second
shutout of the week
On Tuesday, the
sophomore pitching duo of
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) and
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) combined
to toss a three-hitter to lead the Cerritos College
baseball team to a 4-0 South Coast Conference win
over Long Beach City College. On Saturday, the duo
matched that feat, as the Falcons posted a 3-0 win
over the Vikings, with Hendrix and Quezada allowing
just three hits. Sandwiched between those games was
a 4-3, 10-inning win by Cerritos, as the team
remained in first place with three SCC games
remaining. Heading into Saturday, the Falcons
(16-12, 12-6), who have now won a season-high five
games in a row, were tied with ECC Compton Center
for first place. Cerritos plays their final three
conference games against Mt. San Antonio College,
while the Tartars will play El Camino College.
Before the conference games, Cerritos will play four
non-conference contests next week. First up, is a
2:30 p.m. make-up game at Chaffey College on Monday,
followed by 11:00 a.m. affair against Fresno City
College (at Cuesta) and Merced College (at Allan
Hancock) on Wednesday and Thursday in the Hancock

Field on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. make-up game against
Santa Ana College...[more]
04.14.11 - Hector Gomez drives in

Sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez
(John Glenn HS) drove home sophomore
outfielder
Lorenzo Brunetti
(Community Harvest HS/Los Angeles City College)
with the game-winning run in the top of the 10th
inning on Thursday to give the Cerritos College
baseball team a 4-3 South Coast Conference win over
Long Beach City. The win was the fourth in a row for
the Falcons, who improved to 15-12 overall and 11-6
in SCC play, while the Vikings slipped to 14-16 and
9-8. The two teams will conclude their three-game
set at noon on Saturday at Kincaid Field.
The win by the Falcons, coupled with ECC Compton Center's 8-4
loss to East Los Angeles College on Thursday, moves the team into a tie for
first place. Both Cerritos and the Tartars are 11-6 in the SCC, with East LA a
game back. There are four conference games remaining in the season, with
Cerritos facing Long Beach City once and fifth place Mt. San Antonio College

04.12.11 - Pitching leads Falcons
to third win in a row
For the first 6
2/3 innings of their South Coast Conference game
against Long Beach City College, the Cerritos
College pitching tandem of
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) and
Nick Quezada (Mayfair HS) were
on the verge of tossing just the fifth no-hitter in
school history. However, Andy Hernandez put an end
to that when he doubled past a diving
Bubby Rossman
(La Habra HS) in left field for the first
hit of the game for the Vikings. The Falcons would
finish off the game with a 3-hit, 4-0 win for their
third win in a row. It improves their season record
to 14-12 and puts them in sole possession of second
place in the SCC at 10-6 with five games remaining.
The teams will play the second of their three game
set at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Long Beach City
(14-15, 9-7).
Hendrix started the game and toss four innings of
no-hit ball while allowing just one walk before
Quezada (6-4) came on to start the fifth inning. In

04.09.11 - Cerritos takes series
from LA Harbor
If
the Cerritos College baseball team is going to
remain in contention for the South Coast Conference
championship, their goal is to win the series
against each of their opponents. They did just that
on Saturday when the posted a 5-2 victory over host
Los Angeles Harbor College to improve to 9-6 in
the SCC and 13-12 overall. The Falcons currently sit
in a second place tie with Long Beach City, and
trail ECC Compton Center, who is 10-4 in conference play. Cerritos has six conference games remaining and look to put some distance between themselves and the Vikings, who they host at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday in game one of their three-game set.
In the win over the Seahawks (11-16, 7-8), freshman
pitcher
Jacob Bell (Burroughs HS) was able to limit LA Harbor to just one run on two hits, although he walked four batters and worked out of several jams. He opened the fifth inning by walking the first two batters before stepping aside for sophomore
Kevin Hendrix (Mayfair HS). After allowing a run-scoring single to cut the Cerritos lead to 3-1, Hendrix (2-3) settled down and went on to earn the win, while striking out four in the final five innings...[more]
04.07.11 - Timely hitting and
defense lead to win
Aside from the top
of the fourth inning, when they allowed four runs
and committed two errors, the Cerritos College
baseball team played a solid defensive game. They
coupled that with some timely hitting and the result
was an 8-6 South Coast Conference win over Los
Angeles Harbor College on Thursday at Kincaid Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak and evened
the team's record at 12-12, while they improved to
8-6 in SCC play. The teams will finish up their
three-game series on Saturday at noon at LA
Harbor.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an
RBI single by freshman shortstop
Chris
Hefner (El Dorado HS) that
scored sophomore second baseman
Vince Vega
(Monrovia HS/Rio Hondo College),
the Falcons had some difficulty on defense in the
top of the fourth inning. The Seahawks (11-15, 7-7)
had the bases loaded on a double, hit batter and
walk off sophomore starting pitcher
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS).
With one out, Andrew Carbajal grounded to Vega, who
looked to turn a double play but threw the ball
away, which plated two runners and put runners and
first and third. Carbajal attempted to steal second
base, and when sophomore catcher Vince
Perry (Cypress HS) threw the
ball away, another run scored. Austin Chavira added
an RBI double...[more]
04.05.11 - Falcons unable to shut

Harbor College on Tuesday, they saw the Seahawks
respond with runs of their own. The Falcons, who
trailed, 5-0, 7-4 and 8-7, eventually fell, 11-8 in
their South Coast Conference game. It was the second
loss in a row and third in the last four games for
Cerritos, who dropped to 11-12 on the year and 7-6
in SCC play. They will host LA Harbor (11-14, 7-6)
at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in their second game of a

After falling behind 5-0, the Falcons put four runs
on the board in the top of the sixth inning.
Sophomore catcher
Vince Perry (Cypress HS) opened by reaching base on a error, followed by a base hit from freshman outfielder
Pete Abrams (Palo Alto HS). After a fielder's choice put runners on first and third, Perry scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez (John Glenn HS), while sophomore first baseman

their South Coast Conference game against East Los
Angeles College, the Cerritos College baseball team
had no answer for Huskie pitcher Chris Reyes. With
both teams winning one game each in their three-game
series, the Falcons found themselves behind early
and were never able to generate any offense, as they
suffered a 6-0 setback at Kincaid Field. Cerritos
(11-11, 7-5) will now start a three-game series with
Los Angeles Harbor College with the Seahawks hosting
a 2:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
With sophomore
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) on the
mound after his stellar six-inning relief
performance in his last appearance, the Falcons
looked to ride that momentum. But East LA (14-10,
7-5) got on the board in the first inning, on the
strength of a base hit and stolen base by Ruben
Ramirez before Hendrix uncorked a wild pitch that
sophomore catcher
Vince Perry
(Cypress HS) was unable to locate, allowing
Ramirez to score...[more]
03.31.11 - Rodriguez battles
through for complete game win
Cerritos College
sophomore pitcher
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS)
wasn't about to let anyone step in and finish his
game. After shutting out East Los Angeles College
for the first six innings, Rodriguez surrendered
single runs in the seventh and eighth, but held on
to help the Falcons post a 3-2 South Coast
Conference win at Kincaid Field on Thursday. The win
improved the team's record to 11-10 overall and 7-4
in the SCC, while the Huskies dropped to 13-10 and
6-5. The two teams will play the third game of their
series at noon on Saturday at Kincaid Field.
After breezing through the first six innings, where
Rodriguez (4-1) allowed just three hits, he walked
Ricardo Arias to open the seventh inning. After an
out was recorded, Andy Salcedo doubled down the left field
line before Arnold Banuelos drove in the first run
with a ground out. But it was in the eighth that
Rodriguez seemed to tire. A pair of singles led to a
two-out hit by pitch against Arias, before Rodriguez
walked Frank Martinez to force in a run. But Salcedo
followed with a fly out to end the threat. On the
day, Rodriguez allowed two runs on six hits and
struck out three...[more]
03.29.11 - Falcons defeated by
East LA in the ninth
Looking to extend the game to extra innings, the
Cerritos College baseball team were left on the
field Tuesday night, as East Los Angeles College
pushed across the game-winning run with two outs in
the bottom of the ninth inning. The result was a 4-3
setback in a South Coast Conference game at Cal
State Los Angeles, which snapped a three-game Falcon
winning streak. The two teams will play their second
game of a three-game set at Kincaid Field at 2:30
p.m. on Thursday...[more]
03.26.11 - Solid performance by
Kevin Hendrix highlights win
The Cerritos
College baseball team completed their sweep of El
Camino College on Saturday with an 8-2 South Coast
Conference win at Kincaid Field. But for the first
six innings, the game was a tight affair, with the
Falcons leading, 3-2. However, a three-run sixth
inning gave the team some breathing room, while
sophomore pitcher
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) turned in
his best performance of his Cerritos career. Coming
in to relieve starting pitcher
Jacob Bell
(Burroughs HS) after he led off the fourth
inning by walking Anthony Graham, Hendrix pitched
the final six innings to earn his first win of the
season.
The Falcons, who improved to 10-9 on the year, are
6-3 in SCC play, while the Warriors dropped to 7-15
overall and 1-8 in the conference. Cerritos will now
start a three-game set with East Los Angeles
College, with the first being a 6:00 p.m. contest at
Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday...[more]
03.24.11 - Cerritos puts up power
numbers to beat El Camino
Historically, the Cerritos College baseball team has
not been known as a team that hits home runs. But on
Thursday in their South Coast Conference game at El
Camino College, the Falcons hit a pair of timely
home runs, as they defeated the Warriors, 9-6 for
the second time in as many days. Weather permitting,
the two teams will finish up their three-game set at
noon on Saturday at Kincaid Field...[more]
03.23.11 - Nick Quezada responds
with big game
Pitching in the
rain for the majority of the game, Cerritos College
sophomore pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) had the
El Camino College batters feeling as though they
were swinging under water. Quezada tossed a
complete-game, six-hitter to help lead the Falcons
to a 2-1 South Coast Conference win on Wednesday at
Kincaid Field. The win snapped a two-game losing
streak and improved the team's record to 8-9 overall
and 4-3 in conference play. The two teams will try
and get in the second of their three-game series
tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at El Camino...[more]
03.22.11 - Wet field causes
postponement
Due to the wet
grounds, the Cerritos College baseball game against
El Camino College, scheduled for Tuesday, March 22
has been postponed. The game will be made up at 2:30
p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at Kincaid Field.
03.19.11 - Early lead (and game)
get away from Falcons
After the first two innings of their South Coast
Conference baseball game at the MLB Urban Youth
Academy on Saturday, the Cerritos College baseball
team had built a 2-0 lead against ECC Compton
Center. However, the Tartars scored eight runs over
the next four innings and went on to hand the
Falcons an 8-4 setback. It was the second loss in a
row for Cerritos (7-9, 3-3), who dropped their
three-game series with ECC Compton (7-9, 3-3) two
games to one. The team will now start a three-game
set on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. against El Camino
College at Kincaid Field.
The Falcons only collected five hits on the day and
received RBI hits from both sophomore first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn HS) and freshman third baseman
Jeremy Ruiz (Downey HS). Freshman shortstop
Chris Hefner (El Dorado HS) added a sacrifice fly for an RBI...[more]
03.17.11 - Cerritos pounded by
ECC-Compton
With their ace on
the mound, there was no reason for the Cerritos
College baseball team to expect anything less than a
stellar performance from sophomore pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS). He set
down 11 of the first 12 batter he faced to start the
game on Thursday against ECC Compton Center. But by
the time he was removed in the seventh inning, he
had allowed eight runs (five earned), as the Tartars
handed the Falcons a 13-4 South Coast Conference
loss at Kincaid Field. The two teams will play the
third game of their series at noon on Saturday at
Compton.
Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the
teams were locked in a 4-4 tie. But that's when ECC-Compton
(6-9, 3-2) started stringing hits together against
Quezada (4-2). After Mark Silva opened the stanza
with a base hit, Quezada got the next two outs
before Kyle Gonzaga followed with an RBI double.
Back-to-back base hits by Pascual Garcia and Evan
Kenebrew, whose line drive off Quezada knocked him
out of the game...[more]
03.15.11 - Offensive surges power
Falcons to win
For
the second time in three games, the Cerritos College
baseball team was able to get on the board first,
which helped propel them to a win. In both
occasions, that offense has come off the bat of
freshman outfielder
Pete Abrams
(Palo Alto HS). On Tuesday in a South Coast
Conference game against ECC Compton Center at the MLB
Urban Youth Academy, Abrams led the game off with a
solo home run. It would spark a three-run first
inning that resulted in an 8-4 win over the Tartars.
The Falcons (7-7, 3-1) will host ECC-Compton on
Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the second game of their
three-game series.
After Abrams opened with his third home run of the
season, freshman shortstop
Chris Hefner (El Dorado HS) was hit by a pitch and then driven home on a double by sophomore outfielder
Hector Gomez (John Glenn HS). After another hit by pitch and single by freshman outfielder
Bubby Rossman (La Habra HS) to load the bases, sophomore designated hitter
Vince Perry (Cypress HS) gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly...[more]
03.12.11 - Win streak snapped by
Pasadena City
Through
the first seven innings of their South Coast
Conference baseball game, Cerritos College was
locked in a scoreless draw against visiting Pasadena
City College at Kincaid Field on Saturday. But the
Lancers pushed four runs across the plate in the top
of the eighth inning to only three for the Falcons
in the bottom of the stanza. The end result was a
4-3 loss that snapped a six-game winning streak for
Cerritos (6-7, 2-1). The team will now embark on a
three-game series with ECC Compton Center, with the
first game set for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Compton
College.
Freshman pitcher
Jacob Bell
(Burroughs HS), making his first start of the
year, pitched seven shutout innings and limited the
Lancers (4-9, 1-2) to just two hits and struck out
eight batters. He was relieved in favor of freshman
Nick Sanchez (Lakewood HS), who faced
two batters without recording an out. Freshman
Cesar
Chavez (Mayfair HS) came on and surrendered
a single to Sean Stone, which loaded the bases.
Stone broke the scoreless tie when he scored on a
wild pitch, which was followed by a walk. Matt
Chavez then drove home a pair of runs with a base
hit, while an infield out by Andrew Newman drove in
the fourth run...[more]
03.10.11 - Abrams clubs two home
runs in 7-3 win
On
Tuesday afternoon, Cerritos College freshman
outfielder
Pete Abrams
(Palo Alto HS) drilled the first pitch he saw
against David Whitaker that appeared to be going
over the fence for his first home run of the season,
But Pasadena City College right fielder Ahmed Razi
went over the fence to pull the ball back in and
robbed Abrams of the round-tripper. However, on
Thursday, Abrams made sure he wasn't robbed against
the Lancers again, as he clubbed the first pitch of
the game off AJ Smouse for a home run. He followed
with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to
lead the Falcons to a 7-3 South Coast Conference
win. It marked the fourth win in a row for Cerritos
(6-6, 2-0), who will close out their three-game set
against Pasadena City (3-9, 0-2) at noon on Saturday
at Kincaid Field...[more]
03.08.11 - Falcons open
conference with 5-2 victory
The Cerritos
College baseball team opened their South Coast
Conference season by collecting 11 hits and scored
timely runs, as they defeated Pasadena City College,
5-2 on Tuesday at Kincaid Field. The win was the
third in a row for the Falcons (5-6, 1-0) after
suffering through a five-game losing streak. The two
teams will play their second of a three-game set on
Thursday 2:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Field.
The Falcons broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in
the bottom of the fourth inning off starting pitcher
David Whitaker (1-3). With one out, sophomore second
baseman
Vince Vega
(Monrovia HS/Rio Hondo College) doubled and
then came home on a two-out double by sophomore
catcher
Vince Perry
(Cypress HS). Freshman third baseman
Jeremy Ruiz (Downey HS) drove
in Perry with a base hit....[more]
03.01.11 - Cerritos posts 2-1
walk-off win
Freshman left
fielder
Pete Abrams
(Palo Alto HS) drilled a 1-2 pitch up the
middle to dive home freshman pinch-runner
Roland
Hernandez (El Rancho HS) with
the game-winning run to lead the Cerritos College
baseball team to a 2-1 non-conference win over Mt.
San Jacinto College on Tuesday afternoon at Kincaid
Field. The win was the second in a row for the
Falcons (4-6), who open South Coast Conference play
on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Pasadena City
College.
After both teams scored in the first inning, neither
squad was able to push a run across the plate until
the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning,
freshman pinch-hitter Nick Sanchez
(Lakewood HS) drew a walk in his first
plate appearance of the season. Sophomore catcher
Nick Gosano (Lakewood HS)
attempted to sacrifice bunt Hernandez to second
base, and when the throw by Eagles (4-6) pitcher
Ricky Norton was high, the Falcons had runners on
first and second with no outs.
That left it to Abrams, who scored the team's first run, and
he drilled a two-strike fastball up the middle, with
Hernandez racing home with the game-winning run...[more]
02.24.11 - Nick Quezada pitches
Falcons to 3-0 win
One of the bright
spots for the Cerritos College baseball team thus
far has been the pitching of sophomore
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS). He
opened the season by pitching seven shutout innings
in a 9-0 win over Fullerton College and on Thursday
helped snap the team's five-game losing streak with
a 3-0 shutout over Los Angeles Valley College at
Kincaid Field. Quezada (2-1), who has already signed
with Oral Roberts University, pitched 8 2/3 innings
and limited the Monarchs (3-6) to five hits and
struck out eight batters. He was removed with two
runners on base and two outs in the ninth inning in
favor of sophomore
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS),
who recorded the final out.
The performance by Quezada was critical for the
Falcons (3-6), who had allowed 18 runs to Chaffey
College two days earlier and were on the brink of
the longest losing streak in school history. In his
time on the mound, Quezada allowed just six balls to
be hit out of the infield, while he struck out
Fabian Loza looking to end the eight inning with
runners on first and second. With out outs in the
ninth, the Monarchs were able to stay alive on a
fielding error by sophomore second baseman
Vince Vega
(Monrovia HS/Rio Hondo College) and a base
hit by Bryce Kelly. But Rodriguez came on and got
pinch-hitter Trevor Rapp to fly out and end the
game...[more]
02.22.11 - Pitching woes continue
in lop-sided loss
For the Cerritos
College baseball team, their pitching
inconsistencies have been one of the main reasons
the team is off to a 2-6 start, including a
five-game losing streak that was extended after an
18-3 non-conference loss to Chaffey College at
Kincaid Field on Tuesday. The Falcons actually led,
2-1 after the first inning, but the Panthers (5-2)
were able to score their first six runs without
the benefit of a base hit. Cerritos will look to
snap their skid when they host Los Angeles Valley
College on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in a rain make-up
game.
After sophomore starting pitcher
Kevin
Hendrix (Mayfair HS) allowed a
run in the top of the first inning when he hit two
batters and walked another, he was spotted a 2-1
lead after the Falcons scored twice on five hits.
But Hendrix (0-2) opened the second inning by
hitting the first two batters and his throwing error
allowed the bases to be loaded. After a walk and
another hit batter (his fifth of the game), Hendrix
was removed in favor of freshman
Jacob Bell
(Burroughs HS), who promptly hit the first
batter he faced with his first pitch...[more]
02.21.11 - Wet field causes
another cancellation
The Cerritos College baseball
game that was slated for Monday, February 21 against
Santa Ana College has been postponed once again. The
culprit? An over-saturated infield that has not been
able to dry out after the latest storm that hit
Southern California. The new dirt has not had a
chance to dry and the lack of an infield tarp has
kept that part of the infield uncovered and exposed
to the elements. Falcon head coach Ken Gaylord
is hoping to try and play that game this Friday,
February 25, but is more concerned with getting in
his scheduled 2:00 p.m. game on Tuesday against
Chaffey College.
02.20.11 - Tentative rain
make-ups announced
Although the Cerritos College
baseball team got a new field in the off season, it
still couldn't stand up to the rain it received in
the last several days. As a result, the two home
games at Kincaid Field that were scheduled for
Saturday, February 18 have been tentatively
rescheduled. The Falcons will host Santa Ana College
at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 21 and Los Angeles
Valley College at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February
24. But, according to head coach Ken Gaylord,
but games are still tentative and will be played
based on the condition of the field and pending more
rain.
02.18.11 - Rain washes away
Saturday double-header
The Cerritos College
baseball team was slated to host both Los Angeles
Valley College (10:00 a.m.) and Santa Ana College
(2:00 p.m.) on Saturday, February 19. But due to the
rain, both games have been washed out, with only one
scheduled to be made up at this time. Weather
permitting, the Falcons will host Santa Ana on
Monday at a time yet to be determined. The condition
of the field after the rain will also play a part in
whether or not the game will be played on Monday.
02.18.11 - Late-inning runs send
Falcons to fourth straight loss
Through the first
eight innings of their non-conference game against
Golden West College on Friday afternoon, the
Cerritos College baseball team was able to keep
Golden West College in check. Sophomore starting
pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) had
limited the Rustlers to just on run on four hits
through the first seven innings before making way
for freshman
Anthony Nunes (Gahr HS). But
Golden West scored three times in the top of the
ninth inning, sending the Falcons to a 4-3 setback.
The loss was the fourth in a row and second straight
one-run loss. The team is scheduled to host Los
Angeles Valley College (10:00 a.m.) and Santa Ana
College (2:00 p.m.) if the weather allows.
The Falcons were down 4-2 heading into the bottom of
the ninth inning, but did score once and had runners
at first and second when the game ended. Sophomore
first baseman
Tim Soonthorngarun (John Glenn HS)
drew a one-out walk off winning pitcher John Brewer
(2-1) and was lifted for freshman pinch-runner
Evan Sanchez (St. Paul HS).
Freshman pinch-hitter
Erick Gomez
(El Rancho HS) was also walked, which
forced the removal of Brewer for Jordan Moak...[more]
02.17.11 - Time change for Golden
West game
In an effort to beat the oncoming
rainstorm, the Cerritos College baseball game,
scheduled for Friday, February 18 against Golden
West College, has been moved to noon. The game was
origionaly slated to be played at 2:00 p.m. at
Kincaid Field. It was announced earlier in the day
that the game at Chaffey College has been postponed
due to wet grounds until Wednesday, April 20.
02.17.11 - Game against Chaffey
postponed
Due to wet grounds, the Cerritos
College baseball game at Chaffey College has been
postponed. The non-conference game has been
rescheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. at
Chaffey. Weather permitting, the Falcons will host
Golden West at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and then are
slated to host Los Angeles Valley College (10:00
a.m.) and Santa Ana College (noon) on Saturday.
02.12.11 - Late runs allow
Moorpark to pull out win
Heading into the
bottom of the ninth inning in their non-conference
game at Moorpark College on Saturday, the Cerritos
College baseball team was clinging to a 5-4 lead.
The Raiders were able to scratch out a run in the
bottom of the ninth inning and then won the game
with another run in the bottom of the 10th inning to
send the Falcons to their third straight road loss
in as many days. Cerritos (2-4) will now play their
fourth road game in a row when they travel
to Chaffey College at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday...[more]
02.11.11 - One bad inning enough
to defeat Falcons
If not for a
six-run second inning by host Los Angeles Valley
College on Friday, the Cerritos College baseball
team would have been in good shape of picking up
their third win of the season. As a result, the
Falcons dropped to 2-3 on the year with their 9-5
loss. The team will look to snap a two-game road
losing streak on when they face Moorpark at noon on
Saturday.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first
inning when freshman shortstop
Chris
Hefner (El Dorado HS) led off
with a base hit, stole second, advanced to third
base on a single by freshman second baseman
Jeremy Ruiz
(Downey HS) and scored on an infield out by
freshman left fielder
Pete
Abrams (Palo Alto HS). But the
Monarchs (3-2) came back and posted six runs on
the strength of four hits and four hit by pitches by
sophomore starting pitcher
Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk HS).
Rodriguez (0-1) was chased from the game before the
end of the second inning and Cerritos was forced to
try and catch up the rest of the way...[more]
02.10.11 - Slow start costs
Cerritos
Less than a week ago, the Cerritos College baseball
team took advantage a several miscues by College of
the Canyons to come away with a 7-5 non-conference
win. On Thursday, the Falcons had their share of
mishaps and it cost them in a 7-2 loss to the same
Cougars team. Cerritos (2-2) committed three errors,
hit into three doubles plays and saw sophomore
starting pitcher
Nick
Quezada (Mayfair HS) hit three
batters. The team will look to rebound on Friday at

02.05.11 - Team capitalizes on

02.03.11 - Cerritos opens season
with shutout win
Sophomore pitcher
Nick Quezada (Mayfair HS)
and sophomore right fielder Hector Gomez
(John Glenn HS) were in mid-season form on
Thursday, as the Cerritos College baseball team
opened their 2011 season hosting Fullerton College
at Kincaid Field. Quezada, who has already signed

of four-hit baseball and struck out eight, while
Gomez went 4-for-5 with four RBI, as the Falcons
defeated the Hornets, 9-0. The team will continue on
Friday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Glendale
College.
Gomez started the offense in the bottom of the first
inning with a two-run single that plated freshman
shortstop
Chris Hefner (El Dorado HS)

Jeremy Ruiz
(Downey HS). Hefner got the inning started
with a bunt single before Ruiz drew a walk.
Sophomore left fielder
Lorenzo Brunetti
(Community Harvest HS/Los Angeles City College)
advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before
Gomez laced the first pitch into right field off
Nick Russo (0-1).
Quezada, who battled through the first inning when
he threw 25 pitches, eventually posted all three
outs via strikeout and punched out at least one
batter in each of the first five innings. He limited
the Hornets to just four singles and hit two

12.11.10 - Former Falcon baseball
player named manager
Former Cerritos College baseball player and
assistant coach Bill Mosiello has been named
the manager of the Arkansas Travelers, the double-A

Mosiello, a longtime coach at the collegiate and
professional levels, recently served as the manager
of the Cedar Rapids Kernels, where he led the
single-A affiliate team to a 160-116 record during
the 2009 and 2010 seasons. This will be the sixth
team as a manager Mosiello has worked, and has
compiled a 357-274 record. He also spent part of
three seasons in the New York Yankees organization
(2004-06), with the majority of his coaching
experience coming at the collegiate ranks.
Mosiello, who played for the Falcons

As one of the 10
new inductees to the fifth class of the College
Baseball Hall of Fame, former Cerritos College
baseball coach Wally Kincaid had
everyone at the United Spirit Arena on the campus of
Texas Tech University anxious to hear what the
legendary coach had to say during his induction

"I'm probably the only person here who hit a double off the
New York Yankees' Red Ruffing and who was thrown
out at the plate trying to score on a 400-foot
fly ball by Joe DiMaggio when our local team
played an Army Air Force base squad in Southern
California during World War II," said Kincaid.
From 1958-77 and 1979-80, Kincaid served as an
innovator to how baseball is played, and his
coaching style is mirrored by countless coaches
to this day. In addition to leading the Falcons
to six California Community College baseball
state championships, Kincaid also won six
Southern California Championships, one Northern
California Championship, 15 conference
