01.24.12 - Cerritos has four mid-year signings
 With
the early signing period passed, the Cerritos
College football team has announced that four of
their players have signed with four-year
universities and are already attending classes at
their new colleges. Heading that list is
All-American sophomore tight end
Clark Evans
(Los Alamitos HS), who signed with the
University of Hawaii. Sophomore strong safety
Daniel Roundtree (American
Heritage, FL HS) has inked with Southern
Methodist University, while sophomore linebacker
Dominick Sierra (La Habra HS)
will be playing at Northern Colorado University. The
fourth signing is sophomore offensive lineman
Brandon Davidson (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who has signed with Benedictine
(KS) College.
Evans, who transferred to the Falcons from the
University of Colorado, had a flair for making
acrobatic catches during the season, as the Falcons
captured their second straight Northern Conference
championship and appearance in the Southern
California championship game. After finishing the
season with 31 receptions for 444 yards (14.3
average) and a team-high nine touchdowns, Evans was
named 1st Team California Community College Football
Coaches Association All-American. He will be joining
a Hawaii team that just named Norm Chow as their
head coach and are coming off a 6-7 season. The
previous coaching staff did not employ a tight end,
and Evans will be looked upon as one of their main
options from that position next season...[more]
01.19.12 - New alignment released for football
season
The
Southern California Football Association has
announced a new conference and division structure
that will be in place for the next two years,
beginning with the upcoming fall 2012 season. For
the Cerritos College football team, they will remain
in the National Division Northern Conference, and
will retain four of their common opponents from the
last two seasons. Remaining in the same division as
the Falcons are Allan Hancock, Bakersfield, Ventura
and College of the Canyons. The season schedule is
slated to be released sometime in February...[more]
01.09.12 - Clark Evans named All-American
TE
Cerritos
College sophomore tight end
Clark Evans
(Los Alamitos HS/University of Colorado)
had a flair for making acrobatic catches during the
season, as the Falcons captured their second
straight Northern Conference championship and
appearance in the Southern California championship
game. After finishing the season with 31 receptions
for 444 yards (14.3 average) and a team-high nine
touchdowns, Evans was named 1st Team California
Community College Football Coaches Association
All-American.
Evans was also joined by four teammates to be
selected to Region IV First Team All-California. In
addition to Evans, freshmen offensive linemen
Kent Collins (Los Alamitos HS)
and
Sean Rubalcava
(St. Paul HS), along with sophomore
quarterback
BJ Denker
(North Torrance HS) and sophomore nose
guard
Fred Lavulo
(Cottonwood, UT HS)...[more]
11.26.11 - Falcons lose, 17-14 in SoCal
Championship game
Faced with
third-and-18 at their own 48-yard line with less
than two minutes remaining in the game, the Cerritos
College football team was within striking distance
of playing for their first state championship in
school history. It seemed like they would be just
six feet away after sophomore quarterback
Brandon Denker
(North Torrance HS) completed a 50-yard
pass to freshman wide receiver
Robert Abeyta
(Servite HS). But a pass interference call
against Abeyta negated the completion and the
Falcons were turned away in a 17-14 loss to Mt. San
Antonio College in the Southern California
Championship game at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on
Saturday afternoon. On the third down play, Denker
was chased out of the pocket and rolled to his left,
where he threw into double-coverage trying to find
Abetya. All three players were fighting for
position, but Abeyta was called for pushing to gain
separation on the reception. An incomplete pass and
a desperation pass that was intercepted, ended the
hopes for Cerritos, who ends their season at 8-4,
while Mt. SAC moves on to play for their third
straight title. It also marks the second season in a
row that the Falcons advanced to the SoCal
Championship game, only to be turned away by Mt.
SAC.
In a defensive struggle that was defined by field
position, the Mounties spent most of the day in
Falcon territory, while a great defensive team
effort kept Cerritos in the game the entire day. By
contrast, the Falcons spent the day deep in their
own territory and relied on two long drives to
account for their touchdowns...[more]
11.23.11 - SoCal championship game to be streamed
live
Unable to attend the Cerritos College football game,
as they play for the Southern California
Championship at Mt. San Antonio College at 1:00 p.m.
on Saturday? No need to worry, because
www.socalcollegesports.com will stream the game
live for free. The duo of Mike Zepeda and Jeff Stoyanoff
will handle the play-by-play and color commentary,
as the Falcons look to advance to the state
championship game for the first time in school
history. The site has developed a great relationship
with Cerritos College, as the site has covered
Falcon football, men's and women's soccer games, and
recently were on hand for the state men's and
women's water polo championships that were hosted at
the Cerritos Aquatic Center...[more]
11.22.11 - Cerritos one win away from playing for
state title
Last season, the Cerritos College
football team needed to win their final four
National Conference games in order to earn a share
of the championship and followed that with their
first play-off win in school history. That sent them
up against Mt. San Antonio College in the Southern
California Championship game, where the Falcons were
shut out for the first time in 241 games to end
their bid for that ever-elusive state championship.
Fast forward to the 2011 season and Cerritos started
the season 0-2 and were 2-3 at the bye week. Only
five straight wins would propel the team into the
playoffs and another chance at the state title. The
Falcons were able to win their five conference games
and defeated Palomar College, 45-28 last week in the
Southern California Football Association Bowl. All
that meant was that Cerritos would have to face the
top-seeded Mounties in the Southern California
Championship game and one win away from playing for
a state championship. The game is slated for 1:00
p.m. on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio...[more]
11.19.11 - Big strike offense leads Falcons to
playoff win
Several trends
have been set this season for the Cerritos College
football team that mirror last year. First, they
repeated as the Northern Division champion and
played their playoff game on the road against a team
that defeated them at home in the regular season. In
2010, the Falcons were defeated at home against
Saddleback College, only to come back and beat them
in the Southern California Bowl on the road. This
year, Cerritos was defeated at home against Palomar
College and then returned the favor on Saturday with
a 45-28 win at Escondido HS in the Southern
California Football Association Bowl. The win was
the sixth in a row the Cerritos. The Falcons (8-3)
hope that's the end of the similarities, as the team
was shut out for the first time in 199 games by Mt.
San Antonio College in the Southern California
Championship game last season. They get another shot
at the Mounties next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. after Mt.
SAC defeated El Camino College, 34-7 in the other
playoff game. The winner will advance to the state
championship game on December 10...[more]
11.15.11 - Falcons have 13 named All-Conference
 After
winning their second straight Northern Conference
championship, the Cerritos College football team had
13 of their players earn all-conference honors,
while head coach
Frank Mazzotta was named the
conference's Coach of the Year for the second season
in a row. Sophomore quarterback
Brandon Denker
(North Torrance HS) was also named the Offensive
Most Valuable Player, with four players earning
unanimous 1st Team all-conference honors, which
qualifies them for All-State recognition. The
Falcons (7-3) are
preparing to face Palomar College (7-3) at 5:00 p.m.
on Saturday at Escondido HS in the Southern
California Football Association Bowl, which
represents the first round of the playoffs.
"It's an awesome honor to be named the conference's
Coach of the Year for the second season in a row,"
said Mazzotta, who also won the in two other seasons
during his 34 years with the Falcons. "It's also
great to win the championship of the top bracket in
Southern California for two years in a row. We're
9-1 in conference play the last two years and only
Mt. San Antonio (10-0) has a better record than us."
The back-to-back conference championships by the
Falcons marks the first time in the program's
history they they have won the title two seasons in
a row since winning the conference title in their
first four years of existence (1957-60). Back then,
they were members of the Western State
Conference...[more]
11.13.11 - Cerritos to face Palomar in playoffs
For the third time
in the last four years, the Cerritos College
football team will be facing Palomar College in a
post-game contest. Back in 2008, the Comets handed
the Falcons a 38-33 setback in the Golden Empire
Bowl Game, while a 31-17 loss in the first round of
the Southern California Regional Playoffs ended the
season for Cerritos in 2009. This year, the Falcons
(7-3), champions of the Northern Conference, will
face Palomar (7-3) in the Southern California
Football Association Bowl at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday
at Escondido High in a first round playoff game.
Earlier in the season, the Comets handed Cerritos a
41-27 home loss in the second week of the season.
Last year, the Falcons dropped a home game to
Saddleback College in the regular season, but
returned the favor with a playoff win on the
road.
Cerritos was seeded #3 for the playoffs, while the
Comets, who came in second place in the Southern
Conference, was seeded #2 for the playoffs.
Defending state champion Mt. San Antonio (9-1) was
seeded #1 and will host #4-seeded El Camino College
(8-2), who finished in a tie for second place in the
National Conference.
In their earlier meeting this season, the teams were tied
13-13 heading into the fourth quarter, but the
Comets accounted for 28 of the 42 fourth quarter
points to pull out the win. After a 19-yard
touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Brandon Denker
(North Torrance HS) to sophomore wide
receiver Lindsey
Anderson (Serra HS) tied the game at
20-20 with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter, the
Falcons chose the kick the ball high and short on
the ensuing kickoff. Thomas Worden took the ball at
the Palomar 33-yard line and returned in 20 yards to
the Cerritos 47-yard line. After a run for no
yardage, Comet quarterback David Fisher found a
streaking Alex Wheat down the sideline for a 47-yard
touchdown that only took :43 seconds off the clock...[more]
11.12.11 - Late defensive stand preserves fifth
win in a row
At the midway
point of the season, the Cerritos College football
team was mired in a 2-3 record and were looking for
answers as to how they were going to turn their
season around. They found the answers they were
looking for, as they swept through the Northern
Division with a 5-0 record that included a 35-27 win
over visiting Allan Hancock College on Saturday
night. Cerritos (7-3) withstood a last-second drive
by the Bulldogs (6-4, 2-3) to post the win and will
likely travel to Mt. San Antonio (9-1) next Saturday
at 1:00 p.m. in a first round Southern California
Regional Playoff game. The two divisional champions
earn automatic playoff bids, while a Power Rating
Index (PRI) determines who will be the other two
teams to advance to the playoffs. Once the four
teams are determined, the Southern California
rankings determine the seeding for the playoffs.
Prior to the final regular season game, the Falcons
were ranked #6 in Southern California and trailed
the second place teams in the two conferences that
were eligible for the playoffs.
On the final drive of the game, Allan Hancock took
over possession of the ball after the Falcons kicked
the ball out of bounds at their own 46-yard line.
Cerritos was coming off a three-play, seven-yard
touchdown drive that was started when freshman
linebacker Chass Glaspie
(Westchester HS) forced a fumble, recovered
it and returned the ball to the Bulldog seven-yard
line. On the third play of the drive, sophomore
quarterback
Brandon Denker (North Torrance HS)
broke the tackle of Justin Richardson at the 10-yard
line and raced into the end zone for an eight-point
lead...[more]
11.05.11 - Win clinches share of conference
championship
For
the second year in a row, the Cerritos College
football team has clinched at least a share of the
Northern Conference championship and have earned a
berth in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
The Falcons won their fourth game in a row with
their 41-19 victory over Bakersfield College to
improve to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The team will close out their regular season by
hosting Allan Hancock College (6-3, 2-2) at 7:00
p.m. next Saturday. Heading into the final game,
Cerritos sits atop the conference with a 4-0 record,
while El Camino College, who lost to the Falcons,
42-21, is in second place at 3-1. Last season, the
Falcons defeated Saddleback College in the Southern
California Bowl before losing to Mt. San Antonio
College in the Southern California Championship
game...[more]
10.29.11 - Falcons win double-overtime game
Leading 28-13 in the third quarter of
the Northern Division game against College of the
Canyons, the Cerritos College football team seemed
to be in good shape to hold on to at least a share
of first place in the division. But after the
Cougars scored 23 straight points, including 15 in
the fourth quarter, the Falcons were on the verge of
having their bid to defend their division title and
a shot at the Southern California Regional Playoffs
come to an end. But a late fourth quarter touchdown
on a 15-yard pass from sophomore quarterback
Brandon Denker
(North Torrance HS) to freshman wide
receiver Garrion
Manning (Long Beach Wilson HS) with
:42 second left sent the game into overtime. After
both teams scored in the first series, sophomore
running back
Cory Westbrook (Long Beach
Poly HS) punched the ball in from a yard out,
and when the Falcon defense held, they picked up
their third straight win, 48-42...[more]
10.22.11 - Cerritos puts it all together in upset
win
At the start of
the season, the expectations for the Cerritos
College football team were very high, especially
after winning the Northern Conference championship
and advancing to the Southern California
Championship game. But after a slow 2-3 start after
the first half of the season, the players and
coaches were still very confident in their team's
abilities. The Falcons put together their best
all-around game on Saturday night in their annual
Homecoming Game, posting a convincing 42-21 win over
previously undefeated El Camino College. Cerritos
(4-3, 2-0) will now host College of the Canyons at
7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
At the outset of the game, it appeared as though the
#2-ranked Warriors would be able to work their way
through the Cerritos defense, as they took their
first drive 69 yards in 7:15 and after a two-point
conversion, led 8-0. Playing without leading rusher
Thomas
Gray (Narbonne HS/Los Angeles
Harbor College), who is feared to be lost for
the season with an injury, the attention was turned
to sophomore
Donald
Livingston (Savanna HS), who
went on to run for 75 yards and two touchdowns on
the night. On their drive after the El Camino
touchdown, a personal foul call against the Warriors
helped the Falcons drive the ball downfield, where
sophomore quarterback
Brandon Denker (North Torrance HS)
connected with freshman Garrion
Manning (Long Beach Wilson HS)
for a 33-yard touchdown. On the play, Denker
scrambled and threw to Manning, where it appeared
that El Camino linebacker Taumoeaulau Kavienga was
going to knock the ball down. But all he did was tip
the ball to Manning, who pulled it in at the back of
the end zone for a touchdown. Sophomore
Lindsey
Anderson (Serra HS) caught the
two-point conversion for an 8-8 tie...[more]
10.15.11 - Second half rally leads to 31-24 win
Trailing 14-0
after the first quarter against Ventura College, who
entered the game ranked #3 in Southern California in
total defense and #1 in the state against the rush,
the Cerritos College football team knew they would
have to make some adjustments on offense if they
were to win their National Division Northern
Conference opener on Saturday. The Falcons started
their comeback with 16 second quarter points to
trail 21-16 at the half and then outscored the
Pirates, 15-3 in the second half for a 31-24 win.
Cerritos (3-3, 1-0) will now host El Camino College
next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the college's annual
Homecoming Game...[more]
10.01.11 - Falcons drop 56-21 game to Saddleback
After the first 15
minutes of their Southern California Football
Association game at Saddleback College, the Cerritos
College football team found themselves down, 21-0,
with the top-ranked Gauchos only possessing the ball
three times. The Falcons (2-3) fought their way back
to a 28-14 deficit, but could get no closer, as
Saddleback recorded a 56-21 win. The 56 points were
the most a Cerritos football team has allowed since
a 56-21 loss to El Camino College in 1995 and the
second most points ever allowed, with a 58-36 loss
to Palomar College in 1992 the most allowed. The
Falcons will get a bye next week before they begin
National Division Northern Conference play at
Ventura in a 6:00 p.m. game on October 15...[more]
09.26.11 - Game against Saddleback to be streamed

On Saturday, October 1, the
Cerritos College football team (2-2) will be on the
road to face Saddleback College (4-0) at 6:00 p.m.
at Gaucho Stadium. For those who are unavailable to
attend the game, it will be streamed live on the
Gaucho Sports Network, which is a pay-per-view
service. Cost to watch the live stream of the game

09.24.11 - Cerritos posts 26-10 win over West LA
Using their huge
size advantage in the trenches, the Cerritos College
football team accounted for 289 yards on the ground,
while the defense allowed just 32 yards, as they
posted a 26-10 win over West Los Angeles College
on Saturday at Falcon Stadium. The win was the
second in a row for the Falcons, who improved to 2-2
on the year, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3.
Cerritos will have a huge test next Saturday when
they travel to Saddleback College for a 6:00 p.m.
game. The teams split their two games last season,
with the Falcons recording their win in the Southern
California Bowl. The Gauchos (4-0) are ranked #2 in
Southern California after their 48-14 win over
Victor Valley College, while the Falcons were ranked
#16 heading into their game against West LA.
Cerritos had their hands full against the Wildcats,
who trailed just 16-10 with 12:26 left in the third
quarter after a 37-yard touchdown run by Dominic
Cooper. However, the Falcons upped their lead to
19-10 on a 23-yard field goal by freshman
Richard Valencia (Paramount HS)
with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter and then
added an insurance touchdown by sophomore running
back
Thomas
Gray (Narbonne HS/Los Angeles
Harbor College) with 1:08 left in the game....[more]
09.17.11 - Record-setting day for Denker leads
Falcons
After the first 13
minutes of their game against cross town rival Long
Beach City College, the Cerritos College football
team had statisticians checking the record books
after the Falcons (1-2) opened a 31-0 lead. No
records were broken, and the game was suddenly
in jeopardy for Cerritos after the Vikings closed
the score to 38-28 with :27 seconds left in the
third quarter. However, the Falcons responded with a
pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and went on to
post a 53-34 win for their first victory of the
season and it keeps the Crosstown Cup on the
Cerritos campus. Cerritos will now host West Los
Angeles at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
The game opened with the Falcons converting on a
26-yard field goal by Richard
Valencia (Paramount HS),
and followed that with a 35-yard
touchdown pass from sophomore
Brandon Denker (North
Torrance HS) to freshman Garion
Manning (Long Beach
Wilson HS) that capped a
three-play, 77-yard drive. It would be
the first of a school-record six
touchdown passes for Denker, tying the
record of Mike Ernst in 1969 against Los
Angeles Pierce College...[more]
09.13.11 - Game to be broadcast online
Looking for the
first win of the season, the Cerritos College
football team will be travelling to face rival Long
Beach City College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at
Veterans Stadium. Both the Falcons and Vikings have
opened the season at 0-2, and a win not only gives
one of the teams their first victory of the season,
it will also earn them the Crosstown Cup, given to
the winner each year. The game will also be
broadcast online at
www.socalcollegesports.com, with Mike Zepeda and
Jeff Stoyanoff providing the action. Cerritos leads
the overall series against the Vikings, 29-22-1,
which includes a 48-28 win last season.
09.10.11 - Loss drops Cerritos to 0-2 on the year
It
was a defensive game for the first three quarters of
the non-conference football game between Cerritos
College and Palomar College, as they were deadlocked
at 13 after the first 45 minutes. But, in the fourth
quarter, the two teams combined for 42 points, with
the visiting Comets (2-0) accounting for 28 points,
as they pulled away for a 41-27 win against the
Falcons, who dropped to 0-2 for the first time since
1977. Cerritos will look for their first win of the
season next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they face
rival Long Beach City College (0-2).
After a 19-yard touchdown pass from sophomore
Brandon Denker (North Torrance HS) to sophomore
Lindsey Anderson (Serra HS) tied the game at 20-20 with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter, the Falcons chose the kick the ball high and short on the ensuing kickoff. Thomas Worden took the ball at the Palomar 33-yard line and returned in 20 yards to the Cerritos 47-yard line. 09.03.11 - Falcons drop 28-23 decision in opener
Looking for their
fifth straight season-opening win, the Cerritos
College football team had no answer for Los Angeles
Harbor College's ground game, and suffered a 28-23
non-conference loss to start the season. The Falcons
(0-1), who are now 37-18-3 lifetime in season
openers, hadn't dropped once since a 14-7 loss to
Moorpark College to start the 2006 campaign.
Cerritos will look to get even next Saturday at 7:00

opener at Falcon Stadium...[more]

players who receive post-season recognition.
For the Cerritos College football team,
three players earned All-American honors by
the California Community College Football
Coaches Association (CCCFCA), while those
three were joined by two more that were
named All-California Region IV.
Sophomore offensive tackle Fou Fonoti

average 377.2 yards a game, received
All-American and All-State recognition. The

11.30.10 - Falcons recap strong season

game of playing for the state championship. The
Falcons won the Northern Conference championship,
posted a 34-14 win over Saddleback College in the
Southern California Bowl and swept the conference
awards, as they posted a 9-3 record. The nine wins

Frank Mazzotta's storied career with Cerritos.
Mazzotta, who was named the conference's Coach of
the Year, also saw sophomore running back Daveon Barner (Long Beach Poly HS) be named the Offensive Player of the Year, while sophomore free safety
