11.18.09 - Falcons have 17 named All-Conference
Led by 10 1st Team selections on
both offense and defense, the Cerritos College
football team saw 17 named to the All-Northern
Division Central Conference Team. The Falcons (9-1),
who are preparing for their upcoming Southern
California Regional Playoff Game against Palomar
College on Saturday, had one player who was a
unanimous selection. Sophomore running back Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS),
who is lost for the season due to an injury,
received first place votes from all of the other
coaches in the conference.
Named to the 1st
Team on offense along with Carter were center
Jeff Houser (St. John Bosco HS)
and tackle
Jarrell
Winston (Woodrow Wilson, D.C. HS),
who was a 2nd Team selection as a freshman.
Sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS) and one
of his wide receivers,
Joshua
Robbins (La Mirada HS) were
named to the 1st Team, as well as all-purpose player
Eric Russell (Gahr HS). In
fact, Russell was also a 1st Team selection at
defensive back and received the same honors his
freshman year....[more]
11.15.09 - Football seeded #3; hosts Palomar on
Saturday
For the second time in as many
years, the Cerritos College football team will be
facing Palomar College in a post-season game.
However, this year's game will be a first round
Southern California Regional Playoff game, while
last year the two met in the Golden Dome Bowl in
Bakersfield. The Falcons (9-1), seeded #3 for the
playoffs after defeating El Camino College, 42-28 on
Saturday, will host the #6-seeded Comets (8-2) at
7:00 p.m. on Saturday in the National Bowl. The
winner will face the victor of the #2 Fullerton-#7
Los Angeles Harbor winner next Saturday. This marks
the first year the Falcons have advanced to the
playoffs since the format began seven seasons
ago. Tickets for the game are $8 for General
Admission and $5 for students (with ID) and staff
from the two colleges (with ID), senior citizens and
children under 12 years old....[more]
11.14.09 - Win over El Camino sends team to the
playoffs
Playing without two starters on
offense and another two that were questionable
before the beginning of the game, the Cerritos
College football team turned to their defense and
special teams to put points on the board. The Falcon
secondary returned three of their five interceptions
for touchdowns, while the team added another on a
punt return, en route to a 42-28 National Division
Central Conference win over El Camino College at
Falcon Stadium on Saturday night. With the win,
Cerritos (9-1 overall) clinched second place in the
conference at 5-1 and earned their first playoff bid
since the state developed the format seven years
ago. A loss would have dropped the Falcons into a
non-playoff bowl game.
The team will
find out on Sunday if they are seeded #3 or #4
for the first round of the playoffs and will
host an opponent to be determined next Saturday.
The win over El Camino was the first since a
41-31 decision in 2001....[more]
11.07.09 - Blocked extra point ends perfect
season
Freshman kicker
Francisco Rodriguez (Bell HS)
looked to add the extra point in the first overtime
to tie the game against Mt. San Antonio College in
their National Conference Central Division game on
Saturday afternoon. The extra point would have sent
the important game to a second overtime, but his
kick was blocked, and the Mounties came away with a
27-26 victory. Cerritos (8-1, 4-1) entered the game
as the #1-ranked team in Southern California, with
Mt. SAC ranked #2. The loss drops the Falcons into a
three-way tie for first place with one game
remaining. Cerritos will now host El Camino College,
who is the third team in the tie, while Mt. SAC
(8-1, 5-0) will close with Chaffey College. A win
and the Falcons will advance to the
Southern California Regional Playoffs, while a loss
will send them to a non-playoff bowl game...[more]
10.31.09 - Big plays lead Cerritos to 27-17 win
Big players come up big in big
games. It was never more evident for the Cerritos
College football team in their 27-17 National
Division Central Conference win at College of the
Desert on Saturday night. The win improved the
Falcons, ranked #2 in Southern California, to 8-0 on
the year and 4-0 in conference play. They have their
two most important games of the season coming up,
and will travel to Mt. San Antonio College (7-1,
4-0) on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The
Mounties defeated previous #1 El Camino, 42-26 on
Saturday night...[more]
10.24.09 - Falcons rout Riverside for best start
in 44 years
For the first time since their
undefeated 10-0 season in 1965, the Cerritos College
football team is off to a 7-0 start. The Falcons
routed Riverside College, 58-17 at Falcon Stadium
on Saturday night to also improve to 3-0 in the
National Division Central Conference. The 58 points
are also the second most points the team has scored
all season, as they put 66 on the board against
Santa Monica College. Cerritos will now travel to
College of the Desert for a 6:00 p.m. game next
Saturday.
The Falcons
jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first
quarter and led 38-10 at intermission. They
opened the scoring on their first drive, going
70 yards on six plays, which was culminated on a
2-yard run by sophomore running back Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS).
Not long after that, sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS)
tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to sophomore
wide receiver Tavoy
Moore (Gahr HS)...[more]
10.17.09 - Mazzotta wins 200th game with 21-16
victory
It probably wasn't the way he
envisioned it, but Cerritos College head football
coach
Frank Mazzotta
welcomed the cold water bath he received after his
Falcons defeated Citrus College, 21-16 in a National
Division Central Conference win on Saturday
afternoon. Even more than improving the team's
record to 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in the division,
it also marked his 200th career win at Cerritos. The
6-0 start is also the best by a Cerritos team since
they opened the 1993 year with a 6-0-1 mark. The
Falcons will now return home to host Riverside
College in their annual homecoming Game at 7:00 p.m.
next Saturday.
Leading 21-9 early in the second
half, the Falcons withheld a fourth quarter
touchdown by the Owls (1-6, 0-3) as well as a late
drive that saw them get as close as the Cerritos
13-yard line. But a trio of defensive stops held
back Citrus and secured the win. On second down at
the 13-yard line, freshman
Jonathan
Holmes (Washington Prep HS)
broke up an intended pass by Citrus quarterback
Byron Ingram, while freshman
Walton Taumoepeau
(Buena Park HS) applied pressure. On the
next two plays, sophomore cornerback DeQuan
Everett (Long Beach Wilson
HS) broke up a pair of passes in the end zone,
with the second coming on fourth down, which turned
possession back over the Cerritos....[more]
10.03.09 - Cerritos goes into bye week with 5-0
record
Heading into their National
Division Central Conference opener, the Cerritos
College football team wanted to get off to a good
start against Chaffey College at Falcon Stadium on
Saturday night. Last season, it was a 16-9 overtime
loss to the Panthers that eventually kept them out
of the playoffs. After punting away their first
drive, the Falcons got on the scoreboard when
sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS) found
sophomore wide receiver
Joshua Robbins (La
Mirada HS) from 45 yards out for an
acrobatic touchdown. The score seemed to start the
momentum that the defense also picked up on, which
resulted in a 31-14 victory. The win improves the
Falcons to 5-0, their best start since 2002, while
they are 1-0 in conference play. After a bye week,
Cerritos will travel to Citrus College for a 1:00
p.m. game.
Knowing that the Panthers (2-3) would use the
quarterbacking tandem of Michael Leonard and AJ Springer, the latter who
is known to scramble and came into the game leading
the team in rushing, the Falcon defense felt in
order to be successful, they would need to create
pressure the entire night. The end result was
exactly what Cerritos was looking to do, as the team
registered seven quarterback sacks, eight tackles
for loss and six quarterback hurries. The team also
forced seven turnovers (four fumble recoveries and
three interceptions), while limiting Chaffey to 265
yards of offense...[more]
09.26.09 - Falcons hold off Pirates with stopped
two-point conversion
Cerritos College sophomore linebacker
Jack
Francis (La Mirada HS) stopped
Ventura College quarterback Antavius Sims on a
two-point conversion with nine seconds left in the
fourth quarter to preserve a 36-35 win at the
Ventura Sports Complex on Saturday night. Cerritos
will now host Chaffey College (2-2) at 7:00 p.m. next
Saturday in their National Division Central
Conference Opener. The Panthers dropped a 28-27
decision to Grossmont College on Saturday. The 4-0 start by the Falcons is their best
since they started out 5-0 in the 2002 season...[more]
09.19.09 - Football continues to roll up big
numbers
In a series that has spanned 52
years, the common belief is that regardless of their
record, whenever the Cerritos College and Long Beach
City College football teams meet up, the games are
expected to be highly contested.
Frank
Mazzotta, the Falcon head coach for the
last 32 years and member of the 1962 LBCC
National Championship team, has always stressed to
his players and coaches that even if both teams came
into the game 0-9, it will still be the biggest game
of the season. For Mazzotta's Cerritos team, they
broke open a close first quarter and slowly pulled
away for a 47-10 win, which improves their record to
3-0 on the year while the Vikings dropped to 0-3.
The 37-point margin of victory was the second most
lop-sided in the series, with a 41-0 win by the
Falcons in 1985 being the worst. Cerritos, who
improved their series lead over LBCC to
28-22-1, will now play their second road game in a
row when they travel to Ventura College next
Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. contest...[more]
09.12.09 - Cerritos now 2-0 after 66-2 romp
After a slow start to their game
against Santa Monica College on Saturday night, the
Cerritos College football team exploded for 60
straight points in a 66-2 romp. The 64-point margin
of victory tied the team's all-time record, as the
1959 team handed Eastern Arizona College a 64-0 loss
in 1959. The 66-point total also ties for the
third-most points scored in school history, with 76
being the record in a 76-18 win over Ventura College
in 1959. The Falcons (2-0) will now travel to
cross-town rival Long Beach City College for a 6:00
p.m. game at Veterans Stadium on Saturday night...[more]
09.05.09 - Falcons open with 49-7 rout
Although it was just their first
game of the 2009 season, the Cerritos College
football team played as if they were in mid-season
form. The Falcons scored on their first five
possessions of the game and opened up a 49-0 lead
over East Los Angeles College on Saturday night at
Falcon Stadium, before settling for a 49-7
non-conference win. Cerritos (1-0) will now host
Santa Monica College at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
From the outset of
the game, the Falcons were in complete control, as
they maneuvered down the field with little
resistance from the Huskies. On the game's opening
drive, sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS) found
sophomore wide receiver
Michael
Willie (Long Beach Wilson HS)
for a 48-yard reception. A pair of penalties against
East LA put the ball at the two-yard line and
Morales connected with sophomore wide receiver
Joshua Robbins (La Mirada HS)
for a touchdown with only 52 seconds elapsing from
the game...[more]
03.03.09 - Ex-Falcon signs free agent contract
with Seattle Seahawks
Former Cerritos College
All-American wide receiver T.J.
Houshmandzadeh, who spent the last eight
seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, as signed a
five-year free agent contract with the Seattle
Seahawks. Houshmandzadeh, who was an All-Pro in 2007
after leading the NFL in receptions with 112,
selected the Seahawks over the Bengals and Minnesota
Vikings...[more]
02.05.09 - Falcons announce the signing of seven
players
The Cerritos College coaching
staff has announced that seven players from their
2008 team have signed letters of intent, with three
of them going to the PAC-10, while five of them are
Division I scholarships. The Falcons went 7-4 on the
year and were invited to play in the prestigious
Golden Empire Bowl in Bakersfield, where they were
defeated by Palomar College, 38-33...[more] |
