Four Cerritos College football players have signed
letters of intent, while three others are very close to
inking their names with their new universities. Heading
that list of signings is freshman quarterback
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS), who signed a letter of
intent with the University of Utah and will have four
years to play three seasons. Two other members of the
offense have signed their letters, as sophomore tight
end
Brennan Houston (Gahr HS) signed
with the University of Southern Mississippi, while
sophomore offensive tackle
Mark
Jean-Louis (Palm Beach Gardens, FL HS)
has signed to play at the University of Mississippi. On
defense, sophomore cornerback
Arlando Bryant
(Long Beach Jordan HS) is headed to Texas A&M
University Commerce. Those who are close to signing
include sophomore brothers
Dean Laing
(Bellflower HS), a safety, and
Lyndon Laing
(Bellflower HS), a cornerback, who look to be
headed to Texas A&M-Commerce. As for sophomore wide
receiver
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS), he was offered a scholarship by the
University of Idaho, but with the departure of head
coach Dennis Erickson to Arizona State University, it is
unsure if Rhoane accepted the offer.
In his lone
season with the Falcons, Manis completed 111-of-216
passes for 1,389 yards and 13 touchdowns, while he also
rushed for 272 yards, which was second on the team. In a
50-27 win over West Los Angeles College, Manis threw for
five touchdowns, one shy of tying the school record. The
Utes (8-5 on the year), are preparing to face Tulsa in
the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, which will be
played in Fort Worth, TX on December 23. Manis may be
red-shirted this next season, as Utah will have two
senior quarterback returning, along with a third-year
sophomore. Considered having the best hands of a tight
end in the state, Houston caught 15 passes for 204 yards
and one touchdown, while also serving as a key blocker
on the offensive line. For his efforts, Houston was
named 1st Team All-Mission Conference National Division
and was a 3rd Team J.C. Grid-Wire All-American. The
Golden Eagles (8-5), who lost in the Conference USA
championship game, will face the University of Ohio in
the GMAC Bowl, which will be played on January 7. After
a freshman season that was ended shortly by injury,
Jean-Louis came back to help anchor the offensive line
as a starting tackle. At 6-3, 330 pounds, he was an
imposing figure and help create holes for the running
backs, while also providing precious time for Manis. The
Rebels finished the season 4-8 on the year and lose two
linemen to graduation, while they will have three
returning for their senior year. Bryant finished the
season with 29 tackles and tied for the team lead with
three interceptions. He also broke up one pass and had a
tackle for loss. The Lions are coming off a 5-5 season
and are graduating five members of their secondary.
Rhoane led the
Falcons this past season with 39 receptions for 594
yards and four touchdowns, as the team utilized his 6-4
height to their advantage. he was also named 1st Team
All-Mission Conference National Division. Dean Laing had
a very good sophomore season and was rewarded by being
named 1st Team All-Mission Conference national Division
and led the secondary with five passes broken up. He
finished the season with 32 tackles, two tackles for
loss and a forced fumble. His brother Lyndon saw some
time in the starting lineup and finished the year with
27 tackles, a forced fumble, interception and forced a
fumble. |
