The Cerritos College football team
was unable to get their offense going with any kind of
momentum, and suffered their first loss to Orange Coast
College in nine games, as they dropped a 17-7 Mission
Conference National Division game. With the loss, the
Falcons dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the division,
while the Pirates improved to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the
division. Cerritos closes out the regular season next
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Santa Ana College at Eddie
West Field.
After falling behind 10-0 in the
second quarter when Pirate kicker Brock Jaramillo booted
a 27-yard field goal with 12:41 left in the half, the
Falcons went on a seven-play 80-yard drive in 3:42 that
was capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by sophomore
running back
Rylon Thomas
(Valencia HS).
A key play on the drive was a pass interference call
against Orange Coast with the Falcons facing a
second-and-17 at their own 13-yard line. Freshman
quarterback
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS)
kicked the offense into overdrive, completing three
straight passes to move the ball to the Pirate 12-yard
line. He connected with freshman wide receiver
Greg Moore
(Gardena HS)
for 12 yards, followed by a 22-yard strike to sophomore
tight end
Brennan
Houston (Gahr
HS). His biggest play of the drive was a
33-yard connection to sophomore wide receiver
Genoa Dill
(Compton HS),
which put the Falcons within striking distance for what
would turn out to be their lone score of the game.
The Cerritos defense did a good job
of holding the Pirate offense in check, but a long
12-play drive culminated in a touchdown run by Andrew
Banks with 9:57 left in the fourth quarter. On the
drive, Orange Coast ran the ball on the last eight
plays, with the touchdown run coming on fourth down.
Cerritos had one more chance to score, but freshman
quarterback
AJ Toscano
(El Rancho HS)
was picked off at the Pirate 11-yard line. The Falcons
did get into Orange Coast territory three other times in
the second half, but could not convert long third down
plays and were forced to punt.
On the night, Cerritos was limited to
just 93 yards on the ground, with Thomas leading the
team with 43 yards. Manis, who only completed 8-of-20
passes for 108 yards and one interception, was sacked
four times and pressured even more by an aggressive
Orange Coast defensive front seven. A quartet of players
caught two passes each, with sophomore wide receiver
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS)
picking up 45 yards on his two receptions, while Moore
had 37 yards. Freshman linebacker
Kupono Kaawa
(Santa Fe HS)
had a great game, as he recorded 11 tackles and a
quarterback hurry, while freshman linebacker
DeVohn Moutra
(Gardena HS)
finished with 10 stops, one sack and a tackle for loss.
In the secondary, freshman
Hilton Dawson
(Dominguez HS)
added nine tackles and had a key interception. |
