Looking to close out their season on
a winning note, the Cerritos College football team went
four overtimes in their Mission Conference National
Division road game against Santa Ana College on Saturday
afternoon, but still came out on the losing end of a
47-41 game. With the loss, the Falcons finished the
season with a 3-7 mark, while the Dons will earn a
post-season bid with their 7-3 record.
In the fourth quarter, Cerritos took
a 21-14 lead after sophomore running back
Rylon Thomas
(Valencia HS)
scored from two yards out with 8:48 remaining. On the
drive freshman quarterback
AJ Toscano
(El Rancho HS),
who came on in relief of injured freshman
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS)
keyed the drive with a 22 yards run, while he also
completed 3-of-4 passes for 24 yards. But the Dons
responded with an eight-play, 62-yard drive that
resulted in a nine-yard Casey Peters touchdown pass to
RJ Koch with 4:37 left. In the final seconds, the Dons
lined up for a 41-yard field goal, but Dominik
Bronowicki's 41-yard kick was wide right.
After both teams scored and converted
their extra points in the first two overtimes, they were
required to go for two points for any other overtime
periods. After Santa Ana's Brian Allen scored his second
of three touchdowns in the third overtime, Peters tried
to run for the two-point conversion, but was stopped
just shy of the end zone by freshman linebacker
DeVohn Moutra
(Gardena HS)
and sophomore defensive back
Terrell Cole
(Lakewood HS).
The Falcons started their third drive
with Santa Ana being called for defensive holding on a
pass play. Thomas then rushed on four of the five plays
before diving into the end zone with a touchdown and
giving Cerritos a chance to win the game. On the
conversion, Toscano was chased out of the pocket and his
pass was incomplete. Cerritos got the ball again for the
fourth overtime on the alternating possession rule and
Toscano was intercepted by Nathan Mitani on the first
play in the end zone. The Dons ran the ball five times
with Allen on their possession, before he scored from
two yards out for the game-winning touchdown.
On the day, Santa Ana rushed for 218
yards, while Peters completed 25-of-35 passes for 261
yards and four touchdowns. As for Toscano, he passed for
181 yards on 17-of-27 passes and had three touchdowns,
while Manis was 4-for-10 for 44 yards and one touchdown
before his injury. Cerritos finished with 410 yards of
total offense, while Santa Ana had 489. Sophomore wide
receiver
Jerrad Nutt
(California HS)
caught six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, while
sophomore
Genoa Dill
(Compton HS)
pulled in five passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman tight end
Patrick Crow
(Frazier Mountain
HS) also caught his first touchdown pass of
the season. On defense, sophomore linebacker
Aaron Alonzo
(Mayfair HS)
led the team with 12 tackles, while Moutra finished with
10 stops, two tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble
recovery.

with 757 rushing yards and scored 10 touchdowns, with
Manis completing 111-of-216 for 1389 yards and 13
touchdowns, while Toscano threw for 428 yards on
32-of-56 passing. Sophomore
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS)
led all receivers with 39 receptions for 594 yards and
four scores, while Nutt pulled in 21 passes for 257
yards. Freshman defensive back
Hilton Dawson
(Dominguez HS)
led the defense with 67 tackles, while Alonzo and Cole
each had 60. |
