The Cerritos College football team
gave El Camino College all they could handle in their
Mission Conference National Davison game at Murdock
Stadium on Saturday night. But each time the Falcons
would score to get within striking distance of the
#3-seeded Warriors, El Camino would come back to extend
their lead. The final result was a 31-21 Warrior win
that dropped Cerritos to 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in
the division, while El Camino improved to 7-1 overall
and 3-0 in the division. Cerritos will look for their
first home win of the season next Saturday when they
host Orange Coast College at 7:00 p.m.
After the Falcons got within 24-21
after a five-yard touchdown run by freshman running back
Marquiese Reed
(Gardena HS)
with 6:07 left in the fourth quarter, the Warriors
responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass on a
fourth-and-nine play with 2:19 left in the game. After
sophomore strong safety
Dean Laing
(Bellflower HS)
and freshman linebacker
DeVohn Moutra
(Gardena HS)
each made excellent defensive plays to put El Camino in
a fourth down situation, the defense looked to have
quarterback Boo Jackson stopped on fourth down. But,
Jackson escaped the pressure, rolled to his right and
threw a high pass into the back of the end zone for
Verran Tucker, who leaped over three Cerritos players
for a catch and touchdown.
On their next drive, Falcon freshman
quarterback
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS)
was intercepted and El Camino ran out the clock and
picked up their fifth win in a row over Cerritos and
sixth in the last seven games.
The Falcons held a 7-3 lead late in
the second half until Jackson connected with Kayne
Farquarson from 48 yards out with 1:08 left before
halftime. The Warrior lead was extended to 17-7 before
Cerritos went on a 4-play, 74-yard drive that culminated
in a 19-yard scoring strike from Manis to sophomore wide
receiver
Jerrad Nutt
(California HS).
The drive was highlighted by a great 45-yard reception
by sophomore wide receiver
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS).
It only took El Camino 4:57 to regain their 10-point
lead, as Patrick Hill scored from one-yard out after the
Falcon defense stuffed the Warrior runners shy of the
goal line on two straight plays.
However, Cerritos was not done trying
to pull off the upset and responded with a touchdown
just 2:38 later, as Reed plunged in from five yards out
with 6:08 left. Reed also broke off a 17-yard run on the
drive, while Nutt pulled in an over-the-head 25-yard
reception. But El Camino came right back to take their
final 31-21 lead with another touchdown, sending the
Falcons to their fourth loss of 10 or less points this
season.
On the night, Manis led the team with
38 rushing yards on nine totes, while Reed finished with
32 yards on five carries. Manis also completed 15-of-24
passes for 201 yards and one touchdown, with Rhoane (73
yards), Nutt (49 yards) and sophomore right end
Brennan
Houston (Gahr
HS), who had 39 receiving yards, each
leading the team with three receptions. The defense was
led by defensive backs
Hilton Dawson
(Dominguez HS)
and
Terrell Cole
(Lakewood HS),
who each recorded 10 tackles, while freshman linebacker
Michael Terry
(Bell Gardens HS),
playing in place of
Aaron Alonzo
(Mayfair HS),
added nine tackles. Moutra chipped in with eight, while
sophomore defensive end
Jason Nutt
(California HS)
finished with a season-high seven stops. |
