Freshman quarterback
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS)
completed 16-of-26 passes for 249 yards and five
touchdowns to lead the Cerritos College football team to
a 50-27 non-conference win at West Los Angeles College
on Saturday afternoon. The win evened the Falcons record
to 1-1, while the Oilers dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Next up for Cerritos will be Mission Conference
cross-over games, with the Falcons playing host to Mt.
San Antonio College.
For Manis, the five touchdown passes
were one shy of tying the school record, which was set
by Mike Ernst
against Los Angeles Pierce College in 1969. His primary
target on the first two drives was sophomore wide
receiver
Genoa Dill
(Compton HS),
who caught scoring passes of 22 and 28 yards in the
first eight minutes of the game. But before the game was
over, freshman wide receiver
Greg Moore
(Gardena HS)
had the game of a lifetime, as he caught three touchdown
passes from three different quarterbacks. The three
scores was one shy of tying a school record, which was
set by Sean
Willis in 1987 against Mt. San Antonio
College.
With 6:53 left in the second quarter,
Manis connected with Moore from 25 yards out after
catching a 15-yard pass on the drive. In the fourth
quarter, freshman
AJ Toscano
(El Rancho HS)
connected with a streaking Moore for a 50-yard score
before sophomore
Mike Roy
(La Serna HS)
found Moore for a 62-yard touchdown pass with 10:22 left
in the game. On the play, Moore split two defenders and
caught the ball on the run and sprinted into the end
zone untouched.
The Falcon offense was firing on all
cylinders and exploited the Oiler secondary, as the trio
of quarterbacks combined to throw for 390 yards, while
they also added 246 yards on the ground. The 390 yards
through the air were three shy of tying the school
record, while the 636 total yards was just off the
school record of 670 yards the team rolled up against
Mt. San Antonio College in 1972. Cerritos jumped out to
a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and led 29-13 at the
break. In the second half, the offense kept moving
downfield and held leads of 43-13 and 50-20 in the
fourth quarter. In the final minutes of the game,
Cerritos drove down to the Oiler 4-yard line, but chose
to take a knee to run out the clock. The 50 points were
the most by the Falcons since a 53-0 win over Golden
West College in 1998.
The lopsided score gave the coaching
staff an opportunity to use the bench more, and those
players fared well. With sophomore starter
Rylon Thomas
(Valencia HS)
rushing for 78 yards on 12 carries, freshman backup
DeAngelo Mingo
(Desert Pines HS,
NV) came on in the fourth quarter and rushed
for 45 yards on four carries, while sophomore
Ty'Rone
Jenkins (Long
Beach Poly HS) added 29 yards on three
carries. Through the air, Toscano completed 3-of-7
passes for 74 yards and also rushed twice for 28 yards,
with Roy adding 62 yards on 2-for-3 passing. The trio of
Moore (5-158-3), Dill (4-75-2) and sophomore
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS),
who caught four passes for 72 yards and a score handled
most of the duties, but freshman
Ryan Pettys
(Los Alamitos HS)
had the prettiest catch all day. Late in the third
quarter, Manis sent a pass up in the corner of the Oiler
end zone, where Pettys went up high and pulled down the
pass for a touchdown as he was falling backwards. It was
his only catch of the day.
The defense put a lot of pressure on
West LA quarterback Boomer Welles, even though he passed
for 359 yards and two scores. Cerritos had five
quarterback hurries, led by sophomore defensive tackle
Justin
Vasquez (Diamond
Bar HS), who had two and added three tackles
and 1 1/2 tackles for loss, while the team combined for
five tackles for loss and broke up seven pass attempts.
Freshman linebacker
Kupono Kaawa
(Santa Fe HS)
led the team with seven tackles and also recovered a
fumble, while sophomore cornerback
Terrell Cole
(Lakewood HS)
chipped in with six tackles, a tackle for loss and he
broke up a pass. |
