The Cerritos College football team
streaked out to a 10-0 lead over Mt. San Antonio College
in their Mission Conference crossover game at Falcon
Stadium on Saturday night, but the Mounties scored 17
second half points and pulled out a 24-17 victory. With
the win, the Falcons dropped to 1-2 on the season, while
Mt. San Antonio is now 3-0. Next up for the team will be
a 5:00 p.m. contest at Riverside College next Saturday.
In the first quarter, Cerritos was
able to move the ball up and down the field with little
resistance and scored on their opening drive, as
sophomore running back
Rylon Thomas
(Valencia HS)
scored from 12 yards out with 12:54 left in the first
quarter. After a missed Mt. SAC field goal, freshman
quarterback
Chad Manis
(Los Alamitos HS)
directed the team downfield, as he completed 5-of-6
passes for 54 yards before the drive stalled and
freshman kicker
Jesus Ochoa
(Paramount HS)
booted a 36-yard field goal. The big play on the drive
was a 26-yard completion to sophomore tight end
Brennan
Houston (Gahr
HS) on a third-and-10 play.
After the Mounties got on the
scoreboard, Cerritos worked themselves into field goal
range, thanks in part to a 30-yard run by sophomore
Ty'Rone
Jenkins (Long
Beach Poly HS), but Ochoa missed a 23-yard
attempt. The Cerritos defense continued to shut down the
Mt SAC offense and after a poor punt put the ball at the
Falcon 35-yard line, the Falcons needed just three plays
to score again and go up, 17-7. Manis connected with
sophomore wide receiver
Cory Rhoane
(Gahr HS) for
a 43-yard game before Jenkins took care of the final 22
yards, including a 17-yard scoring run with 2:48 left in
the half.
But it was all Mounties in the second
half, as they scored 17 unanswered points and found
their running game, with Randall Brown doing most of the
damage, as he finished with 118 yards on 19 carries
including the eventual game-winning touchdown, a six-yarder
with 10:56 left in the fourth quarter. Mountie
quarterback Jake Fadden, who struggled early, came on as
the game progressed and finished with night with 229
yards on 18-of-26 passes with two interceptions and one
touchdown.
The big defensive play of the night
happened late in the third quarter with the Falcons
driving. With first-and-10 at the Mt. SAC 30-yard line,
Manis looked to throw a short out pass, but Mt. SAC's
John Richardson stepped in front of the pass and went 75
yards for a touchdown with 1:19 left in the third
quarter to tie the game.
On the night, Cerritos amassed 344
yards, while the Mounties had 372. On the ground Thomas
finished with 85 yards on 18 carries, with Jenkins
adding 65 yards on eight carries. Manis threw for 233
yards on 18-of-33 passing, with Rhoane pulling in five
passes for 81 yards. On defense, sophomore cornerback
Terrell Cole
(Lakewood HS)
had 11 tackles, with the other cornerback, freshman
Hilton Dawson
(Dominguez HS)
finishing with 10 stops. |
