The Cerritos College football team found the
quick-strike aerial attack by Mt. San Antonio College to
be too much to handle on Saturday night in their Mission
Conference National Division game. The Falcons, who did
their best to stay with the Mounties, wound up losing,
54-27, which dropped their record to 3-5 on the year and
0-3 in divisional play. The loss was the fifth in a row
for Cerritos, who had lost their previous four games by
a total of 20 points. As for Mt. SAC, they improved to
6-2 overall and 3-0 in the division. Cerritos will now
travel to Pasadena City College on Saturday for a 1:00
p.m. game, that may or may not be their final game of
the season.
The Commission
on Athletics has ruled that those teams that cancelled
their games two weeks ago can make them up, but they
would have to be against teams from within their
conference. Because the Falcons were scheduled to play
Saddleback College, and they will be participating in
the playoffs, Cerritos now needs to find a new opponent
if they are to play a game on November 17.
Looking to stay
with the Mounties offensively, the Falcons appeared to
be within striking distance on several occasions, but
were victimized by turnovers. After falling behind, 13-0
in the first quarter, sophomore quarterback AJ
Toscano (El Rancho HS) took the team on a
4-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a seven-yard
scoring strike to freshman wide receiver Sheldon
Smith (Culver City HS). The big play on the
drive was a 69-yard swing pass to sophomore running back
Lorenzo Goode (Hermitage (VA) HS/Allan Hancock
College) that put the ball at the Mountie six-yard
line. However, Mt. SAC would take a 27-7 lead with just
six seconds left in the first half after the Falcons
failed on a fourth down play at midfield.
The Falcons came
right out in the second half and drove downfield to
score, making the score, 27-13. Toscano connected on a
30-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Craig Bell
(Gardena HS) to get deep into Mountie territory.
Then, on fourth and goal at the six-yard line, sophomore
wide receiver Ryan Pettys (Los Alamitos HS)
pulled on a Toscano pass for a touchdown.
Each time
Cerritos scored, the Mounties had an answer. Six of the
Mt. SAC touchdowns were on drives under two minutes.
Goode scored on a one-yard plunge later in the quarter
and Mt. SAC came right back 1:39 later. On the ensuing
kickoff, sophomore Davion Mauldin (Cimarron
Memorial (NV) HS/Minot (ND) State) returned the
kickoff 86 yards to the Mt. SAC 13-yard line. Freshman
Duane Bowen (St. John Bosco HS) then
scored his first collegiate touchdown on the first play.
On the night,
the Mounties amassed 452 yards and six touchdowns
through the air and 156 on the ground, while the Falcons
passed for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Toscano
finished the night 12-for-27 for 204 yards and two
scores, while Good finished with 84 rushing yards and 69
receiving yards. On defense, sophomore linebacker
Kupano Kaawa (Santa Fe HS), freshman
linebacker Doncel Bolt (Long Beach Poly HS)
and sophomore cornerback BG Walters (Dwyer
(FL) HS/Allan Hancock HS) all led the team with
eight tackles, while Walters also broke up four passes. |
