In the latest installment of the Cerritos-Long Beach
City football rivalry, the Falcon defense spent the
first three quarters dominating not only the statistics,
but the numbers on the scoreboard. Through the first
three quarters, Cerritos held a 15-0 lead and even went
up 22-0 before the Vikings scored two late touchdowns to
finish the score a 22-12. The win also secures that the
Falcons will be the recipient of the annual Crosstown
Cup, a perpetual trophy that is awarded to the winner of
the game. With the win, Cerritos is now 3-1 on the
season and lead the overall series 27-21-1, as this
marked the 49th anniversary of their rivalry.
The Falcons will
play their fourth straight game at home next Saturday
when Fullerton College comes to town. But, the Hornets,
who are having a new field put in during the season, are
playing eight of their games on the road and will be
considered the home team on the night.
Cerritos started
the game against the Vikings the same way they have in
the other three contests in which they received the ball
first – with a touchdown. In fact, the Falcons have
scored a touchdown on their first drive of each game,
with last Saturday’s coming to start the second half
against Golden West College.
Sophomore
BG Walters
(Dwyer (FL) HS/Allan Hancock College) started the
game by returning the opening kickoff 24 yards before
sophomore quarterback
AJ Toscano
(El Rancho HS) picked apart the LBCC secondary.
He completed his first four passes, including the final
three plays, which resulted in a 31-yard touchdown to
freshman wide receiver
Sheldon Smith
(Culver City HS). Toscano threw for 57 yards on
the game’s opening drive, while the defense established
themselves in the same manner.
Led by Walters
and sophomore
Davion
Mauldin (Cimarron Memorial (NV) HS/Minot (ND)
State) in the secondary, Long Beach City had trouble
moving the ball, while the defensive front seven were
stuffing any holes that the Vikings tried to create.
LBCC finished the night with 42 yards on the ground and
averaged 1.9 yards per carry, while the defense recorded
six tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a total
loss of 25 yards. Sophomore linebacker
Michael Terry
(Bell Gardens HS) had another great game, as he
posted five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two pass
breakups, one quarterback sack and returned an
interception 17 yards in the second quarter that led to
late second quarter touchdown.
Prior to the end
of the first half, Cerritos extended their lead to 15-0
with good field position after the Terry interception.
Sophomore running back
Lorenzo Goode
(Hermitage (VA) HS/Allan Hancock College) broke
for 24 yards on the second play from scrimmage, while a
20-yard completion from Toscano to freshman wide
receiver
Ronnie Goforth (Mayfair HS) put the ball
at the Viking 4-yard line. With 49 seconds left,
freshman
Junior
Tivao (Paramount HS) scored his first of
two touchdowns, as he followed the lead block of his
330-pound brother,
Johnny Tivao
(Paramount HS), the team’s starting nose guard.
Long Beach did
generate offense in the latter part of the game, as
quarterback Andrew DeFelice found several receivers open
for big gains. DeFelice finished the night with 285
yards through the air and two touchdowns, with Aaron
Lewis pulling in seven passes for 92 yards and 40-yard
touchdown on a nice slant pattern. Justin Robertson
scored the other Viking touchdown, a 5-yard strike with
17 seconds left in the game.
Goode led all
rushers with 114 yards on 23 carries, while Toscano
completed 13-0f-20 passes for 182 yards. Sophomore
Ryan Pettys
(Los Alamitos HS) led the team with five
receptions for 93 yards, including a 42-yarder. |
