With as many momentum swings as there were in the
Cerritos College football game at home against Fullerton
College Saturday night, it would come as no surprise of
people were requesting Dramamine by the end of the game.
After three lead changes, three missed fourth down
conversions deep in opposing territory, 15-of-27 third
down conversions and several key turnovers, it all came
down to a third down conversion by the Hornets, who
escaped Falcon Stadium with a 29-23 win. The win by
Fullerton improves their record to 4-1, while Cerritos
drops to 3-2, as the Mission Conference enjoys a bye
next weekend before they begin divisional play.
It appeared the
Falcons may have taken the life out of the Hornets in
the third quarter after missing on a fourth-and-one at
the Cerritos seven-yard line with just over six minutes
left in the third quarter. Fullerton quarterback Kyle
Olson appeared to have Tanner Maher all alone for a
first down and apparent touchdown, but he threw the ball
short and Cerritos took over possession. On the first
play from scrimmage, sophomore running back
Lorenzo Goode
(Hermitage (VA) HS/Allan Hancock College) broke
off a school-record 93-yard touchdown run to give the
Falcons a 23-14 lead. Goode broke his run off right
tackle and outran the Hornet defense and into the Falcon
record book. He broke with old record of 91 yards, set
by Andre Wooten against Golden West College in
1986.
But Fullerton
came right back on their next possession and drove deep
into Cerritos territory by running the ball 10 straight
times. The 11th play was a fourth and goal at
the Falcon one-yard line, in which Olson was credited
with a touchdown after some discussion by the officials.
To the fans in the stands, it appeared as though Olson
had the ball stripped by freshman nose guard
Johnny Tivao
(Paramount HS), with sophomore defensive back
Davion
Mauldin (Cimarron Memorial (NV) HS/Minot (ND)
State) returning it 100 yards for a touchdown. But
the officials stated that, even though Olson was still
moving his legs, he crossed the goal line, which ended
the play and negated the fumble return.
Once again,
Cerritos came right back on the strength of the arm of
sophomore quarterback
AJ Toscano
(El Rancho HS), who completed five passes to get
deep into Hornet territory. But, on second and goal at
the five-yard line, Toscano was sacked and had the ball
stripped by Coleman Goff, with Pat Atherton recovering
the fumble for Fullerton. A couple of long runs by
Brandon Edwards got the ball into Cerritos territory and
a 23-yard run on a reverse by Brandon Minor put the ball
at the Falcon five-yard line. Minor then scored on the
next play with 10:25 left in the fourth quarter and
after a two-point conversion, Fullerton led, 29-23.
Cerritos did get
one last break in the game when they stopped the Hornets
on a fake punt, as Olson was tackled short of the first
down marker by freshman
Matt Moody
(Sonora HS), with the Falcons taking over the
ball at the Hornet 39-yard line with 7:17 remaining.
Freshman wide receiver
Sheldon Smith
(Culver City HS) broke off an 18-yard run on a
reverse on the first play from scrimmage, but the drive
stalled after getting to the Fullerton 10-yard line. Two
running plays netted a negative one yard before Goode
picked up nine, putting the ball at the two-yard line on
fourth down. That set up the huge formation the Falcons
use, in which Tivao comes in to block for his brother,
freshman linebacker/running back
Junior
Tivao (Paramount HS), with sophomore
linebacker
Kupono Kaawa (Santa Fe HS) coming in as a
fullback. But Junior Tivao was stopped immediately by
Tyler Boblit on the play, as Fullerton ran out the clock
for the win.
On the ground,
Goode rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while his
total was the seventh-highest in school history. Toscano
completed 15-of-25 passes for 152 yards, while a trio of
players caught three passes each. For the Hornets,
Edwards carried the ball 14 times for 158 yards, while
Olson threw for 156 yards. Defensively, Junior Tivao had
seven tackles, while Mauldin, sophomore linebacker
Michael Terry
(Bell Gardens HS) and freshman linebacker
Doncel Bolt
(Long Beach Poly HS) all finished with six each. |
