Sophomore
quarterback
Jeffrey
Fischer (Lakewood HS)
completed 20-of-24 passes for 250 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the Cerritos College football
team to a 45-27 National Division Central Conference
win over College of the Desert on Saturday night.
With the win, the Falcons are now 6-2 on the season
and 3-1 in divisional play with two games remaining.
They will host the nation's top-ranked team, Mt. San
Antonio College at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday in their
biggest game of the season.
Fischer, who
completed 19-of-22 passes the week before, put the
team up 10-0 when he connected with sophomore wide
receiver
Joshua
Robbins (La Mirada HS) for a
50-yard touchdown with 4:18 left in the first
quarter. On the play, sophomore wide receiver
Sheldon Smith (Culver City HS)
threw a great block at the 20-yard line that cleared
the way for Robbins. Cerritos took a 3-0 lead on
their first drive when freshman kicker
Pedro Puga
(La Habra HS) booted a 25-yard field. The
Falcons have now scored on their first drive of
every game this year.
The Roadrunners
did not lay down and scored late in the second
quarter to cut the score to 10-7 at intermission.
Just as they did in the first half, the Falcons
drove downfield and scored on a Fischer to Robbins
touchdown from five yards out with 11:18 left in the
third. The drive started when freshman defensive end
Jeramey Cutler (Lakewood HS)
recovered a fumble.
Cerritos scored
touchdowns on all five of their possessions in the
second half, with five different players reaching
the end zone. Sophomore fullback/linebacker
Junior
Tivao (Paramount HS) pounded
the ball in from two yards out, while a 36-yard
touchdown reception by Smith gave the Falcons a
24-14 lead one play after College of the Desert
scored. Running backs
Duane Bowen
(St. John Bosco HS) and
Marshawn
Friloux (Bellflower HS) also
rushed for touchdowns.
The Falcons
amassed 465 yards of total offense on the night,
with 207 coming on the ground and 258 through the
air. If there was anything that slowed the offense
down, it was penalties, as Cerritos was whistled 15
times for 145 yards, while the Roadrunners were
called for 119 yards on 13 miscues. Bowen led the
team with 74 yards on the ground, while Friloux
added 50 yards on just three carries. Robbins (5
receptions, 78 yards), Smith (4-61) and Bowen (4-28)
led the team in receptions.
On defense,
freshman linebacker
Jack
Francis (La Mirada HS) led the
team with nine stops and a fumble recovery, while
posting four of those tackles on special teams.
Freshman linebacker
Matthew
Moody (Sonora HS) finished
with seven stops, with the team posting three
quarterback sacks and six tackles for loss.
