It’s been 2005 since the Cerritos College football team
has won an overtime game. On Saturday in their National
Division Central Conference opener at Chaffey College,
the Falcons lost their fourth consecutive overtime game,
dropping a 16-9 decision. With the loss, Cerritos fell
to 3-2 on the year while the Panthers improved to 4-1.
After a bye week, the Falcons will host Citrus College
at 7:00 p.m.
It appeared as though the Falcons were going to come away
with a rain-soaked win after freshman kicker
Nick
Arellano (St. John Bosco HS) booted a
37-yard field goal with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter.
On that drive, Cerritos appeared to break a 6-6 tie when
sophomore quarterback
Jeffrey
Fischer (Lakewood HS) connected with
sophomore wide receiver
Sheldon Smith
(Culver City HS), but the play was called back
due to a pass interference penalty against the Falcons.
That set up Arellano’s field goal.
On the ensuing kickoff, Arellano kicked off out of
bounds and the Panthers had the ball at their own
40-yard line. After four consecutive rushing plays got
them to the Falcon nine-yard line, Chaffey kicker Edgar
Chavez booted a 25yard field goal with 24 seconds left.
With a short clock, the Falcons started their ensuing
drive from their own 40-yard line, with Fischer hitting
freshman wide receiver
Randall Cox
(Long Beach Poly HS) for 33 yards that got the
team to the Panthers 20-yard line. However, Arellano saw
his 37-yard field goal blocked on the last play of
regulation.
In the first overtime, Chaffey, who rushed for 224 yards
on the night, continued their success on the ground and
scored a touchdown on a 13-yard run from Mark Chase.
Cerritos chose to go through the air on their overtime
possession and after two incompleted passes, a delay of
game penalty, a three yard run and a five-yard pass
completion left the team without any points and the
loss.
Trailing 6-0 at the end of the third quarter, the
Falcons finally got on the scoreboard when Fischer hit
freshman tight end
Eric
Roberson (Long Beach Poly HS) from two
yards out with 14:24 left in regulation. After a 13-yard
run by Fischer gave the team a first and goal at the
four-yard line, Chaffey was called for a late hit, which
gave the Falcons the ball at the two-yard line. The
team’s other points came on the Arellano field goal,
while he missed an extra point.
On the night, freshman running back
Marshawn
Friloux (Bellflower HS) made an impact in
the fourth quarter, rushing for 73 yards on 11 carries,
with Fischer adding 54 yards on nine carries. Through
the air, Fischer completed just 14-of-30 passes for 178
yards with sophomore
Joshua
Robbins (La Mirada HS) leading the team
with four catches for 66 yards.
For the defense, it was freshman linebacker
David Flores
(St. Paul HS), who led the team with 13 stops,
while freshman linebacker
Matthew Moody
(Sonora HS) contributed 10 stops and a pass
breakup. Sophomore defensive tackle
Johnny
Tivao (Paramount HS) stuffed the line of
scrimmage and made nine tackles and two tackles for
loss. |
