For the second
week in a row, the Cerritos College football team
got off to a fast start in their Southern California
Football Association game. The Falcons, who opened
up a 37-0 lead at the end of the first quarter in
their season-opener against East Los Angeles College
en route to a 65-7 win, held a 35-0 lead in the
third quarter against Santa Monica College at Falcon
Stadium on Saturday night. By the final whistle,
Cerritos had a 56-24 win and their second straight 2-0 start
to a season. In fact, the 121 points in
the first two games is the most the Falcons have
ever scored. They will look to improve to 3-0 for
the first time since their 5-0 start in 2002 when
they host crosstown rival Long Beach City College at
7:00 p.m. next Saturday. The winner of the game gets
possession of the Crosstown Cup, which is currently
housed with the Cerritos team.
Sophomore
quarterback
Jeffrey
Fischer (Lakewood HS) tossed
four touchdown passes in the win, with the first two
going to sophomore wide receiver
Joshua
Robbins (La Mirada HS), who
pulled in a 29-yarder and 8-yarder in the first
quarter.
There wasn't much
difference when it came to the game's statistics,
aside from the fact that the Falcons were able to
get into the end zone, while the Corsairs (0-2)
couldn't until the fourth quarter when the Cerritos
starters had been removed. On the night, Cerritos
finished with 396 total yards to 297 for Santa
Monica, but it was the ability of the Falcon offense
to move downfield early in the game, while the
defense kept the Corsairs at bay.
After Fischer and
Robbins connected for scores to start the game,
freshman running back
Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS)
led a group of Falcons who moved the ball on the
ground and culminated a nine-play, 35-yard drive
with a one-yard run to give Cerritos a 22-0 lead
after the team connected on a two-point conversion.
The running game accounted for 172 yards and two
scores, with Carter rushing for 81 yards on 11
carries, while freshman
Tavoy Moore
(Gahr HS) added 38 yards on just four
totes.
The aerial assault
contributed 224 yards and five touchdowns (four by
Fischer), with sophomore
Sheldon
Smith (Culver City HS) leading
the team with four receptions for 34 yards and an
8-yard touchdown pass. Eight different receivers
caught passes in the game.
Just like in the
first game, special teams played a role in the
victory, with sophomore
LeQuan
Lewis (Artesia HS/College of the
Sequoias) breaking off a 44-yard kickoff, while
freshman
Randall Cox
(Long Beach Poly HS) added a 50-yard
kickoff return. Freshman
Eric
Russell (Gahr HS) led the
defense with seven tackles and a fumble recovery,
while freshman
Drew
Harris (Whittier HS) added
seven tackles and a forced fumble. As a team, the
defense had nine tackles for losses, four
quarterback sacks and four quarterback hurries, with
sophomore
Ryan Davis
(Artesia HS) leading the way with 2.5
tackles for loss, a hurry and half a sack.
