In their highly-anticipated rivalry
game against Long Beach City College, the Cerritos
College football team met a team that was not only
interested in swiping the Crosstown Cup that goes to
the winner of the game, they were also looking to
swipe the football. Five Falcon turnovers led to 21
Vikings points, as LBCC posted 28-24 win at Falcon
Stadium on Saturday night. The loss dropped Cerritos
to 2-1 on the year, while Long Beach City improved
to 2-1. The Falcons will now host Ventura College at
7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
Leading 24-21 with 5:49 remaining,
the Falcons looked to punt the ball away. But
freshman
Jared Hall
(St. John Bosco HS) fumbled the snap and
LBCC's Iosefo Mikaele scooped up the ball and went
21 yards for the eventual game-winning touchdown.
With another chance to take the lead, sophomore wide
receiver
Joshua
Robbins (La Mirada HS) had the
ball taken away by Roderick Cohn at the Long Beach
City 36-yard line with 4:45 remaining.
With one last chance to win the game,
the Falcons were turned away at the Viking 9-yard
line when Curtis Johnson stopped sophomore wide
receiver
Sheldon
Smith (Culver City HS) one
yard short of a first down on fourth-and-three. One
previous play, LBCC's Joe Faagata slapped down a
Jeffrey Fischer (Lakewood HS)
pass.
But it was turnovers that did in
Cerritos, as they turned the ball over four times in
the second half, while the Vikings were able to
capitalize on the Falcon miscues.
The Falcons took a 14-0 lead in the
first half on a 7-yard touchdown run from freshman
running back
Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS)
before freshman tight end
Eric
Roberson (Long Beach Poly HS)
pulled in a two-yard pass from Fischer (22-for-37,
189 yards) with :43 seconds left before halftime.
The Vikings moved downfield on their next possession
and scored a touchdown with :11 seconds before
halftime to cut their deficit in half.
Long Beach City took the first lead
on the Falcons all season when Stephen Burton scored
from a yard out for a 21-17 lead with 14:57 left in
the game. Fischer gave Cerritos a 24-21 lead on a
naked bootleg with 11:56 remaining. But turnovers on
consecutive possessions that followed proved to be
costly, and the team went down to defeat.
Carter led all rushers with 127 yards
on 20 carries, while the Falcon defense limited the
Vikings to minus-3 yards on the ground. The Cerritos
defense posted nine tackles for loss, with freshman
Jeramey Cutler (Lakewood HS)
registering three, while they added four quarterback
sacks and 13 quarterback hurries. Sophomore
defensive tackle
Matthew
Agaiava (Lynwood HS) led the
team with five hurries, while sophomore safety
Joshua Lomeli (La Mirada HS)
led the team with seven tackles and a forced fumble.
Robbins pulled in a career-high 10 passes for 106
yards, while Smith added four catches for 41 yards.
