Employing a bend-but-don't-break defense the first three quarters of their game against Ventura College on Saturday night, the Cerritos College football team bent as far as they could on the last play of the game. With the Pirates on the verge of pulling out a win, Falcon freshman linebacker Matthew Moody (Sonora HS) sacked Ventura quarterback Lee Mondol on the last play of the game, securing an 18-13 win for Cerritos. With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Pirates dropped to 3-1. The team will now travel to Chaffey College for a 6:00 p.m. game next Saturday.

After opening up a 12-0 lead through the first three quarters, Cerritos saw the Pirates score twice on Mondol touchdown passes to take a 13-12 lead with 5:15 left in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Pirate kicker David Mietnzer sent a low kick that was taken by freshman Marshawn Friloux (Bellflower HS) at the Ventura 46-yard line. The Falcons drove the 46 yards on seven plays and retook the lead on a one-yard plunge by sophomore Junior Tivao (Paramount HS), his third touchdown of the game with 1:05 left in the game. The two-point attempt was missed and Cerritos just needed to shut down Ventura to collect the won.

Just as Mietnzer did with his kickoff, Falcon freshman kicker Nick Arellano (St. John Bosco HS) appeared to kick the top of the ball and the Pirates downed the ball at the Cerritos 47-yard line. Monsol completed two straight passes and rushed twice for 17 yards to put the ball at the Falcon 10-yard line. After an incomplete pass and a timeout, Moody finished the game off by wrapping up Monsol for a 10-yard loss and a win for Cerritos.

Ventura controlled the ball for the majority of the game, and held possession 15 minutes longer than Cerritos (37:58-22:02), while they outgained the Falcons, 382-203.

Cerritos took a 6-0 lead when Tivao busted into the end zone from two yards out and went up 12-0 with 5:40 left in the third quarter when Tivao reached the end zone from a yard out. On the night, Tivao ran the ball four times for seven yards and three touchdowns. Freshman running back Tylik Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS) led the team with 61 yards on 15 carries, while sophomore quarterback Jeffrey Fischer (Lakewood HS) struggled by completing just 10-of-21 passes for 124 yards. Sophomore Sheldon Smith (Culver City HS) and freshman Michael Willie (Long Beach Wilson HS) each caught four passes to lead the team.

Moody was all over the field and led the way with 11 stops, two sacks and two tackles for loss, while freshman defensive back Eric Russell (Gahr HS) added 10 stops. Freshman linebacker David Flores (St. Paul HS) finished with nine tackles, with Tivao adding eight tackles. Sophomore defensive back LeQuan Lewis (Artesia HS/College of the Sequoias) made to superb special teams plays, as he blocked two field goal attempts in a row. The first was called back due to a Cerritos penalty, but he got through again and blocked the kick again to halt a Ventura scoring drive. As a team, the Falcons posted six tackles for loss.
