For the first
time since their undefeated 10-0 season in 1965,
the Cerritos College football team is off to a
7-0 start. The Falcons routed Riverside College,
58-17 at Falcon Stadium on Saturday night to
also improve to 3-0 in the National Division
Central Conference. The 58 points are also the
second most points the team has scored all
season, as they put 66 on the board against
Santa Monica College. Cerritos will now travel
to College of the Desert for a 6:00 p.m. game
next Saturday.
The Falcons
jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first
quarter and led 38-10 at intermission. They
opened the scoring on their first drive, going
70 yards on six plays, which was culminated on a
2-yard run by sophomore running back Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS).
Not long after that, sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS)
tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to sophomore
wide receiver Tavoy
Moore (Gahr HS).
Sophomore
cornerback
Lenyatta Kiles (Culver City HS)
gave the Falcons the ball back on the first play
from scrimmage when he picked off Jacob Mitchell
and gave Cerritos possession at the their own
46-yard line. The drive finished with Carter
rushing for a 19-yard touchdown, his second of
four on the night.
In addition to
the productive offense, the Falcon defense was
also up to the task, as they limited the Tigers
just 299 yards (207 in the air), with the
majority of them coming in the fourth quarter.
By contrast, Cerritos amassed 665 yards of
offense although they ran 19 less plays and had
the ball for 11 less minutes. The average drive
for the Falcons was a little over four plays and
included a 99-yard drive and a 75-yard touchdown
run by Carter after a Tigers turnover.
Riverside put
themselves in bad field possession all night
with 19 penalties for 168 yards. But it was a
Cerritos penalty that prevented a 108-yard
interception return for touchdown by freshman
Keith
McGill (La Mirada HS), who
picked off Mitchell in the back of the end zone
and brought it all the way back for a touchdown.
In the win,
the Falcons did set a new record when Morales
connected with sophomore wide receiver
Michael Willie (Long Beach
Wilson HS) for a 93-yard pass completion.
Although he was caught before reaching the end
zone, the duo broke the old record of a 91-yard
reception set by Doug Baughman
to Kenny Bell against Mt. San
Antonio (2000) and Trini Gardea
to Bill Vincent against Long
Beach City College in 1975. Willie had
a tremendous game that saw him pull in five
passes for 170 yards, which included another
nice diving catch. The 170 receiving yards are
the eighth most in a game in school history.
On the ground,
Carter finished with 163 yards on just 11
carries, while the team ran for 318 yards. His
four touchdowns tied for the second most in a
single game. Freshman back-up quarterback
BJ Denker (North Torrance HS)
also rushed for a 27-yard touchdown. Morales
completed 15-of-25 passes for 321 yards (8th
most in a game in school history) and three
touchdowns.
Not to be lost
on the night was some outstanding defense, as
the Falcons recorded 10 tackles for loss, led by
sophomore defensive end Darryl Johnson
(Long Beach Poly HS/Sacramento State),
who posted 2.5 sacks and also forced two
fumbles. Freshman linebacker
David
Lopez (Garfield HS) led
the team with eight stops, while sophomore
linebackers Cee
Jay Harris (Long Beach Wilson
HS) and
David
Flores (St. Paul HS) added
seven each, while Flores also had 1.5 sacks and
2.5 tackles for loss.
