Although it was
just their first game of the 2009 season, the
Cerritos College football team played as if they
were in mid-season form. The Falcons scored on their
first five possessions of the game and opened up a
49-0 lead over East Los Angeles College on Saturday
night at Falcon Stadium, before settling for a 49-7
non-conference win. Cerritos (1-0) will now host
Santa Monica College at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
From the outset of
the game, the Falcons were in complete control, as
they maneuvered down the field with little
resistance from the Huskies. On the game's opening
drive, sophomore quarterback
Chris
Morales (La Habra HS) found
sophomore wide receiver
Michael
Willie (Long Beach Wilson HS)
for a 48-yard reception. A pair of penalties against
East LA put the ball at the two-yard line and
Morales connected with sophomore wide receiver
Joshua Robbins (La Mirada HS)
for a touchdown with only 52 seconds elapsing from
the game.
It was more of the
same with each possession, with sophomore running
back
Tylik
Carter (Long Beach Jordan HS)
breaking off 19 yards on two carries, along with a
pair of receptions to freshman tight end
Lucas Mealy
(St. John Bosco HS), with the second going
for a 23-yard touchdown.
On the night, the
Falcons amassed 667 yards of offense, with 317 on
the ground and 350 through the air. By the time
Morales was done, he had completed 16-of-21 passes
for 262 yards and four touchdowns, as Mealy (23
yards) and sophomore wide receiver
Tavoy Moore
(Gahr HS), who was wide open in a 42-yard
scoring pass, both adding touchdown receptions.
Mixed in was a stellar 63-yard run from sophomore
running back
Marshawn
Friloux (Bellflower HS), who
broke into open territory and outran everyone on the
field.
Not to be lost in
the offensive success of the team, the Falcon
defense was stingy and allowed only 19 first quarter
yards, while Cerritos was piling up 252 yards.
Without question, it was a group effort, as the trio
of freshman linebacker
David Lopez
(Garfield HS), freshman defensive end
Jake Peppard (La Habra HS) and
sophomore linebacker
Cee Jay
Harris (Long Beach Wilson HS)
each finishing with a team-leading seven tackles. As
for Lopez, he also added 2 1/2 tackles for loss, a
forced fumble, a pass breakup and a quarterback
hurry.
The Huskies
amassed most of their 294 total yards in the second
half, while they finished with only 79 yards on the
ground in 28 carries. By comparison, Falcon freshman
running back
Jason Davis
(La Habra HS) had 93 yards on 12 carries
and a one-yard touchdown by himself, while Friloux
finished with 70 yards on two totes.
Through the air,
Mealy led the team with five receptions for 79
yards, with Willie pulling in four passes for 79
yards. Freshman quarterback
BJ Denker
(North Torrance HS) came on in relief of
Morales and completed 5-of-10 passes for 88 yards.
