Now in his second year with
the Cerritos College coaching staff is
Andrew Alvillar, who will work with the
team’s cornerbacks. From 2005-08, Alvillar
was the head coach at Los Angeles Harbor
College, while he also served as their
defensive coordinator for nine years. During
his time with the Seahawks, he led them to
one Western State Conference South Division
Championship (2004), as well as the 2002
Beach Bowl championship. In addition, he
coached 12 All-Americans (six on defense)
and 11 All-State (six on defense)
selections. In his nine years, 136 athletes
transferred to four-year universities, while
two were Academic All-Americans and one
reached the National Football League. The
Seahawk defense set 13 school records during
his tenure and their 2001 team ranked #1 in
the state and #2 in the nation.
Alvillar’s coaching career started at El
Camino College, where he worked with the
defensive backs from 1998-99 and helped them
win the 1999 South County Bowl Game. Two
members of his Warrior secondary played in
the National Football League, while one had
a career in the Canadian Football League.
As a player, Alvillar attended North
Torrance High and played football,
basketball and was on the track team. He was
an all-league selection in football, while
also being voted their Most Valuable Player
and captain. Alvillar spent the next two
years at El Camino College from 1991-92 and
was an All-State and All-Mission Conference
choice, while earning an AA degree. While at
Sonoma State University from 1995-96,
Alvillar earned the Cossack Defensive Player
Award and finished with a Bachelor’s degree
in Physical Education. He went on to earn
his Master’s degree in Physical Education
from Azusa Pacific University.
In addition to his coaching assignment,
Alvillar is also a part-time instructor at
Cerritos College. He and his wife of five
years, Elizabeth have two children. |
