with a 9-2 record, are sending players to both the
PAC-12 and Big 10, along with other conference.
Leading the list of those that have signed are OT Fou Fonoti, who has signed with Michigan State University, while DE
Eli Edwards signed with Washington State University and FS
Keith McGill inked with the University of Utah, who is the moving to the newly-formed PAC-12. Also signing are LB

01.04.11 - Cerritos players receive national
honors
When a team puts together a 9-3 record on
the year, wins a divisional championship and
comes within one game of playing for the
state championship, there are bound to be
players who receive post-season recognition.
For the Cerritos College football team,
three players earned All-American honors by
the California Community College Football
Coaches Association (CCCFCA), while those
three were joined by two more that were
named All-California Region IV.
Sophomore offensive tackle Fou Fonoti
( Mayfair HS), who helped the offense
average 377.2 yards a game, received
All-American and All-State recognition. The
6-foot-5, 300-pounder, a unanimous 1st Team
All-National Division Northern Conference
selection, also helped the offense account
for 184.9 yards on the ground for the
season...[ more]
11.30.10 - Falcons recap strong season
The
Cerritos College football team had one of their best
seasons in recent memory, as they came within one
game of playing for the state championship. The
Falcons won the Northern Conference championship,
posted a 34-14 win over Saddleback College in the
Southern California Bowl and swept the conference
awards, as they posted a 9-3 record. The nine wins
marks the second year in a row the team accomplished
the feat and sixth time in head coach
Frank Mazzotta's storied career with Cerritos.
Mazzotta, who was named the conference's Coach of
the Year, also saw sophomore running back Daveon Barner (Long Beach Poly HS) be named the Offensive Player of the Year, while sophomore free safety
Keith McGill (La Mirada HS) was the Defensive Player of the Year. It marked the first time that the Falcons had ever swept those awards in the same season...[more]
11.27.10 - Playoff game ends in worst loss ever
The Cerritos
College football team entered the Southern
California Championship game looking for their first
berth in the state championship game, but what they
ended up with was their worst loss in school
history. The #3-seeded Falcons (9-3) were defeated
by #1-seeded Mt. San Antonio College, 51-0
on Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The Mounties
(12-0) now advance to the state championship game in
two weeks. The worst loss a Cerritos team had
suffered prior to Saturday was a 55-41 setback to
Taft College in 1984. It also marked the first time
a Falcon team had been shutout since a 33-0 decision
to Fullerton College in 1988, and ended a 199-game
streak...[more]
11.20.10 - Cerritos takes advantage of Gaucho
mistakes
When the Cerritos
College and Saddleback College football coaches
spoke at the Media Luncheon for the Southern
California Bowl on Thursday, both Falcon head coach Frank Mazzotta
and Gaucho head coach Mark McElroy felt that the one
intangible in the game that could determine the
winner would be who made the most mistakes. For the
Gauchos, it was two snaps over their punter's head
on consecutive possessions that led to Falcon
touchdowns, en route to a 34-14 victory. The win by
Cerritos (9-2) propels them to the Southern
California Championship game, which will be played
at Mt. San Antonio College at 1:00 p.m. next Saturday. The winner
of that game will host the state championship game
on December 11...[more]
11.19.10 - Falcons sweep conference awards
After capturing the National Division Northern
Conference this season, the Cerritos College

(Long Beach Poly HS/Long Beach City College)
was voted the Offensive Player of the Year, while
sophomore free safety
Keith
McGill (La Mirada HS) earned
the Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach
Frank Mazzotta was recognized as the Coach
of the Year...[more]

luncheon
On
Saturday at 6:00 p.m., the Cerritos College and
Saddleback College football teams will be playing in
the Southern California Bowl, which serves as part
of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. But,
on Thursday, the two teams met in Mission Viejo for
a media luncheon, that included members of the
press, as well as players and coaches from both
teams. Cerritos (8-2), the #3-seeded team in the
playoffs, won the Northern Conference championship,
while #2-seeded Saddleback (8-2) finished in second
place in the Southern Conference...[more]

6:00 p.m., the Cerritos College football team will
be facing Saddleback College in the Southern

Conference and are seeded second...[more]
11.14.10 - Falcons seeded #3 for playoffs; at
Saddleback
Although
they won the championship of the National Division
Northern Conference, the Cerritos College football
team was seeded #3 for the Southern California
Playoffs and will travel to face #2-seeded
Saddleback College next Saturday for a 6:00 p.m.
game in the Southern California Bowl. With only four
teams advancing to the playoffs this season, the top
two teams were seeded based on their ranking, while
the other two teams were selected based on Power
Ranking Index (PRI) points. This is the second year
in a row the Falcons have advanced to the playoffs.
They were defeated in the first round last year by
Palomar College, 31-17...[more]
11.13.10 - Cerritos wins Northern Conference
title
On the strength of
their 28-7 win over Allan Hancock College on
Saturday night at Righetti High, the Cerritos
College football team captured the co-championship
of the Northern Conference and a berth in the
Southern California Regional Playoffs which start
next Saturday. Since there are only four teams that
advance to the playoffs, if the Falcons (8-2) are
seeded #2, they will open the post-season at home.
Both Mt. San Antonio College and Saddleback College,
who were ranked ahead of the Falcons heading into
the final weekend, won their games by three points,
which the Mounties defeating Pasadena City, 33-30 on
a last-second field goal...[more]
11.06.10 - Blocked field goal return wins game
In one of the most
incredible endings of any football game, the
Cerritos College football team pulled out a 27-21
National Conference Northern Division win over
Bakersfield College on Saturday night at Falcon
Stadium. With Renegade kicker Josh Gallington lined
up to attempt a 47-yard field goal on the last play
of the game, his kick was blocked by sophomore
Keith McGill (La Mirada HS). A
quick-thinking
Tyrone
Taylor (Narbonne HS) raced to
pick up the loose ball at the Cerritos three-yard
line and began maneuvering through the Bakersfield
team. After breaking two tackles, it looked like
Taylor was going to be brought down before he
reached the end zone. Just as Bakersfield tight end
Jared Hood was about to tackle Taylor, he lateraled
the ball to McGill at the 35-yard line, and he raced
into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown...[more]
10.30.10 - Fumble recovery secures win for
Falcons
With time running out in the fourth quarter and
College of the Canyons driving deep into their
territory, Cerritos College freshman defensive back
Chris
Metcalf (Compton HS) stripped the
ball from Cougar wide receiver Alex Fagerstrom after
his reception. Sophomore defensive back Kamar
Morrison (Inglewood HS) recovered the
ball at the Falcon 16-yard line with 1:19 left on
the clock to secure a 31-24 National Division
Northern Conference win for Cerritos Saturday night
at Cougar Stadium. The victory improved the Falcons
record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference,
while Canyons dropped to 5-3 and 2-1...[more]
10.23.10 - Cerritos dominates line of scrimmage
to record win
Regardless of
their record, each time the Cerritos College and El
Camino College football teams line up against each
other, both know they will be in for one of the more
physical games of their season. The Falcons took
that physicality to another level, as they dominated
the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to
help post a 36-20 National Division Northern
Conference win over the Warriors at Murdock Stadium
on Saturday night. The win snapped a two-game losing
streak for Cerritos (5-2, overall, 1-1 conference),
while El Camino fell to 0-7 and 0-2, with four of
those losses coming as the result of forfeits. The
team will travel to College of the Canyons next week
for a 7:00 p.m. conference game...[more]
10.16.10 - Missed chances turn into 28-21 loss
In the last three
meetings between the Cerritos College and Ventura
College football teams, the average margin of
victory has been five points, with the Falcons
coming out on top each time. In fact, last year's
36-35 win was secured when the Pirates went for two
points after scoring a late touchdown and failed. On
Saturday night at Falcon Stadium in their National
Division Northern Conference opener, Cerritos had a
chance to get within an extra point of tying the
game on two occasions late in the fourth quarter. A
fumble at the Pirate 1-yard line and a fourth-down
sack ended the team's chances of victory, as they
suffered a 28-21 loss.
The setback was the second in a row for the Falcons, who fell
to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They will
now travel to El Camino College for a 6:00 p.m.
conference game next Saturday...[more]
10.02.10 - Fourth down play sacks chance at
victory
Faced with
fourth-and-two and trailing 28-24 to Saddleback
College with 1:21 left in the fourth quarter at
Falcon Stadium on Saturday night, the Cerritos
College football team knew that they had options in
calling their next play. Running the ball to both
sides of the field had shown success, while the pass
was used in certain situations. Looking to run a
play up the middle, Falcon freshman quarterback
Kane Wilson (El Dorado HS/Utah
State University) was sacked when the Gauchos
blitzed from the middle, and Cerritos missed out on
extending their undefeated season. The setback
dropped the Falcons to 4-1 going into a bye week,
while Saddleback improved to 4-1.
After Saddleback took a 28-24 lead with 5:35
remaining in the fourth quarter on a Donnell
Dickerson 1-yard touchdown, Cerritos came right back
and moved the ball downfield in an attempt to score
the game-winning touchdown. Wilson connected with
freshman wide receiver
Jeff Lavulo (Cottonwood, UT HS)
on third-and-two for 12 yards and picked up a big 16
yards on an end around by sophomore
Dion Curry
(West HS). After three Daveon Barner
(Long Beach Poly HS/Long Beach City College)
rushes, Cerritos called time out with 1:21 remaining...[more]
09.29.10 - Rankings hold with Falcons at #3
On
the strength of their 44-9 win at West Los Angeles
College on Saturday, the Cerritos College football
team held onto the #3 ranking in Southern
California, according to the CCCAA/CCCFCA poll that
was released on Tuesday. The Falcons (4-0) will now
host #6-ranked Saddleback College (3-1), who moved
up one spot after their 49-20 win over Victor Valley
College last week...[more]
09.25.10 - Cerritos now 4-0 after 44-7 win
For the second
straight year, the Cerritos College football team
has opened the season with four straight wins. They
upped their mark to 4-0 on Saturday afternoon with a
44-7 win against host West Los Angeles College. The
Falcons will now host Saddleback College at 7:00
p.m. next Saturday.
Cerritos jumped out quickly against the Wildcats (2-2) on the
strength of four
Kane
Wilson (El Dorado HS/Utah State
University) touchdown passes in the first half.
He capped off a 6-play, 40-yard drive with a 12-yard
connection to sophomore tight end
Lucas Mealy
(St. John Bosco HS), followed by a 9-yard
score to freshman wide receiver
Carlos Arredondo (Schurr HS)
that finished off a 5-play, 95-yard drive. On that
drive, sophomore running back Daveon Barner
(Long Beach Poly HS/Long Beach City College)
broke off a 64-yard run that started on the Falcon
six-yard line and included a 15-yard facemask
penalty...[more]
09.18.10 - Ground game and special teams lead the
way
Powered by 409 rushing yards and two kickoff returns
for touchdowns, the Cerritos College football team
proved they had too much firepower in their 48-28
win over crosstown rival Long Beach City College on
Saturday night at Falcon Stadium. The Falcons (3-0)
received rushing touchdowns from sophomores Daveon Barner
(Long Beach Poly HS/Long Beach City College)
and Ray
Craig (Norwalk HS), along with
freshman
Nathan
Castaneda (Los Alamitos HS) to help
propel the ground game. Sophomore
Dion Curry
(West HS) returned a first quarter kickoff 94
yards for a touchdown, with sophomore
Tyrone
Taylor (Narbonne HS) answering a
fourth-quarter Viking touchdown with a 98-yard
kickoff return. Cerritos will look to stay
undefeated when they travel to West Los Angeles
College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game...[more]
09.11.10 - Falcons pull away in second half for
victory
For the last two
years, the Cerritos College football team saw their
season end the same way - with a loss to Palomar
College. The Falcons, looking to continue their
climb back to the state's elite, felt a shock wave
on the first play of the game, as the Comets scored
on a 67-yard pass. But the team recovered quickly
and turned a 20-17 halftime lead into a 34-17
non-conference game at Chick Embrey Field on the
Escondido High School campus on Saturday night.
Cerritos (2-0) will now host crosstown rival Long
Beach City College at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday at
Falcon Stadium.
The two teams rolled up 503 yards of total offense through
the first half and the game looked like it was going
to be a shootout until the end. But the Falcons
gained control of the tempo and shut down the
vaunted Comets offense and held them to 117 yards in
the second half. By contrast, Cerritos worked in
long drives and scored a pair of fourth quarter
touchdowns to put the game out of reach. The two
teams finished with 799 total yards...[more]
09.04.10 - Cerritos opens season with win
Through the first
30 minutes of their 2010 season opener, the Cerritos
College offense looked like they were going to be a
powerhouse on the ground. Against Los Angeles Harbor
College, the Falcons pounded the ball on the ground
and scored a pair of first-half touchdowns. But they
seemed to go away from their "ground and pound" and
the Seahawks played a rejuvenated second half. But
Cerritos was able to hold off LA Harbor and finished
the night with a 29-14 non-conference win...[more]
04.21.10 - Team adds one more to list of signed
players
Cerritos College
sophomore cornerback DeQuan
Everett (Long Beach Wilson HS)
became the latest player to sign a letter of intent
from the 2009 team after he inked with Brigham Young
University. He joins a list of 13 other Falcons that
have signed, with Everett being the sixth to sign
with a Division I school. As a sophomore, Everett
posted 18 tackles, four pass break-ups a
interception and fumble recovery, in helping the
team to a 9-2 record...[more] |
