The Cerritos College men's basketball team converted only 11-of-26 free throws and shot just 39.1% from the field, which resulted in an 87-72 non-conference home loss to College of the Canyons on Wednesday night. By contrast, the Cougars (3-8) converted 23-of-29 from the free throw line and made 45.6% of their field goals. The Falcons (3-5) will now travel to the San Diego Mesa Tournament on Friday and will open with the host Olympians.

Although they led by as many as 11 points (19-8) with 13:46 remaining in the first half, Cerritos struggled over the next eight minutes and didn't score their next point until a three-pointer from freshman guard Brian Barner (Palisades HS) with 5:38 remaining. By then, the Cougars had gone on a 15-0 run that was halted by the trey by Barner. Cerritos would regain the lead by halftime at 29-25, but once again Canyons had an answer by outscoring the Falcons, 11-3 before halftime for a 36-30 advantage.

A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Jeremiah Barnes (Los Altos HS) with 16:12 gave Cerritos their largest lead of the second half, 43-39, but a balanced attack by the Cougars allowed them to break a 55-55 tie and go on for the 15-point win. College of the Canyons forward Brannon Bradley scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the second half, while forward Justin Smith had 14 in the game, along with nine rebounds.

Canyons guard Jason Holtzwarth netted 9-of-10 second half free throws down the stretch, including five in a row and finished with 16 points. Not only did the Cougars pull away with their free throw shooting, they also out-rebounded the Falcons, 52-37, with Bradley leading the team with 13 rebounds. The bench also contributed 25 points and 17 rebounds for Canyons.

Cerritos looked to Barner to get back in the game three points at a time, as he drained 6-of-16 three-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points, while dishing off seven assists. Sophomore guard Van Girard (Gahr HS) contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, with freshman forward Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS) coming off the bench to added eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
