For the Cerritos
College men's basketball team, their late-season
surge not only will send them into the playoffs
after winning the South Coast Conference South
Division, it also earned five of the players
all-conference awards, while first-year head coach
Jesse
Teplitzky was named the Coach of the
Year. Teplitzky, who came to Cerritos after one year
as the head coach at Santa Monica College, has led
the team to wins in 10 of their last 11 games, as
they went on to win the division with a 9-1 record,
while they are 14-13 on the season.
Jackson, who was
the runner-up for the Player of the Year award (LA
Southwest's Kendrick Johnson won the award),
averaged a double-double in divisional play with
13.8 points and 13.3 rebounds a game. He continues
to average a double-double on the year, as he scores
12 points and pulls down 10.8 rebounds a game to go
along with his .505 shooting percentage. As for
Girard, he came off the bench to lead the team in
scoring (14.7) and also averaged 8.6 rebounds and
shot 52% from the field. On the year, his 13.9
points also leads the team, while he averages 8.1
rebounds and is the team leader in field goal
percentage, .525. Preer is the third player to
average double figures in divisional play (10.7) and
is second in rebounds at 8.8 per game.
Barner, the team's
leader in three-point field goals made (80) on the
year, averaged 8.6 points a game in the division,
while he scores 10.7 points on the year. Pope has
taken over the point guard position and posted a
pair of games where he dished out more than 10
assists in a game during the division. He averaged
7.3 points and 5.7 assists a game in divisional play
and produces 5.7 points and 4.0 assists a game
during the season.
