05.14.12 - Falcon basketball
players sign scholarship offers
Two
members of this season's Cerritos College men's
basketball team, along with three more from the
last two seasons, have signed letters of intent
at four-year colleges. Guard Anthony
Scott (Dominguez HS) has
signed with Kansas Wesleyan University, while
forward Darius Williams (Long
Beach Jordan HS), who is receiving a full
scholarship, has inked with Cal Baptist
University. From last year's team, guard Kyli Crooms
will be playing at Arizona Christian University,
with the duo of guard Jeremy Pope
(Cal State San Bernardino) and forward
Ramon Williams (Cal State Dominguez
Hills) settling on schools after sitting out the
last two years...[more]
02.22.12 - Trio earns
all-conference honors
Despite a season to forget, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team had a
pair of players earn 1st Team All-South Coast
Conference recognition, while another was named
to the Honorable Mention team. The Falcons
suffered through their second straight losing
season, finishing the campaign with a 10-17
record, while they finished in last place in the
South Coast Conference South Division. Named to
the 1st Team were sophomore forward
Darius Williams (Long Beach Jordan HS)
and sophomore guard
Anthony Scott (Dominguez HS),
with freshman guard
Anthony Holliday (Norwalk HS)
being selected to the honorable mention team...[more]
02.18.12 - Cerritos closes out
season with win
Sophomore guard
Anthony Scott's (Dominguez HS)
layup with 2.5 seconds remaining turned out to be the
game-winning basket, as the Cerritos College
men's basketball team closed out their season
with a 61-60 South Coast Conference win over El
Camino College at Biola University on Saturday.
The basket was the first lead of the game for
the Falcons (10-17, 2-11) since early in the
first half and it snapped a six-game losing
streak. The play was set up after a Joshua
Wilson turnover with 27 seconds left. Cerritos
called timeout to set up their final play and
worked the ball around to sophomore guard Kierre
Beverly (Long Beach Millikan
HS/Navarro (TX) CC). On the entry pass,
Beverly fed Scott under the basket for the
basket...[more]
02.15.12 - Falcons miss chance
to snap losing streak
With just one game left in the
season, the Cerritos College men's basketball
team came within striking distance of knocking
off first place Los Angeles Southwest College on
Wednesday night in a South Coast Conference
game. The Falcons, who dropped a 57-50 decision
for their sixth loss in a row, had several
chances to take the lead late in the game, but
missed shots and offensive fouls prevented them
from ever taking the lead. Cerritos (9-17, 1-11)
will close out the season on Saturday at 7:30
p.m. against El Camino College at Biola
University...[more]
02.10.12 - Losses continue for
Cerritos
Prior
to starting South Coast Conference play, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team had an
8-6 record and won the championship of the
Irvine Valley Tournament. But since then, the
Falcons have gone 1-10 and suffered their fifth
loss in a row after Los Angeles Harbor College
handed them a 79-51 setback at Gahr High School
on Friday night. Cerritos (9-16, 1-10) has two
games left on the year and will travel to Los
Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday for a
7:00 p.m. game and then close out the season
when they serve as the host against El Camino
College next Saturday at Biola University.
One of the main keys to the win for LA Harbor
(17-9, 7-5) was the fact that they distributed
their scoring very well and committed only four
turnovers for the game. They shot 46% from the
field, while Cerritos converted only 32% from
the field and turned the ball over 15 times.
Freshman guard
Anthony
Holliday (Norwalk HS) and
sophomore guard Kierre
Beverly (Long Beach Millikan
HS/Navarro (TX) CC) were the only Falcons in
double figures, as they both scored 11 points...[more]
02.04.12 - Falcons get clipped
by Vikings
In
another game where the Cerritos College men's
basketball team was within striking distance of
coming up with a strong all-around game, the
final few minutes seemed to be their downfall,
as they dropped an 81-72 South Coast Conference
game to Long Beach City College on Saturday
at Gahr HS. The Falcons (9-15, 1-9) led by 12
points in the first half (27-19) and held a
six-point advantage at halftime. Their lead was
maintained until midway through the second half,
but Cerritos was unable to get any closer than a
point (68-67) in the final four minutes. The
team has a bye on Wednesday and then host Los
Angeles Harbor College at 6:00 p.m. next
Friday.
The lead held up until a three-pointer by
Kristen Owens gave the Vikings (10-13, 7-3) a
56-54 lead with 11:13 left in the second half.
The LBCC lead swelled to
six points (68-62) with 5:43 left, until the Falcons
received a pair of free throws from freshman guard
Michael Crosby (Pioneer HS)
and a jumper from sophomore guard
Robert Gill
(Narbonne HS) to get to within 68-67 with
4:06 remaining. But LBCC's Tyler Tuliau scored seven
of their next nine points to make the deficit
insurmountable for the Cerritos...[more]
02.01.12 - Points and wins
hard to come by for Cerritos
This season, the common obstacle
for the Cerritos College men's basketball team
has been trying to get off to a fast enough
start to a game so they don't have to spend the
entire second half playing catch-up. It was more
of the same on Wednesday night at Pasadena City
College, as the Falcons trailed 42-28 at half,
got as close as seven points in the second half
before losing, 73-60. The setback was the third
in a row for Cerritos, who fell to 9-14 on the
season at 1-8 in South Coast Conference play
with four games remaining in the season. They
will look to snap their latest skid on Saturday
at 7:00 p.m. when they host rival Long Beach
City College...[more]
01.30.12 - College to sponsor
Coaches vs. Cancer
Cerritos College Athletics and
the California Community College Men's and
Women's Basketball Coaches Association have
teamed up to support Coaches vs. Cancer with a
night of fundraising and awareness. On Saturday,
February 4 at Gahr High School, the Falcon men's
and women's basketball teams will host Long
Beach City College in South Coast Conference
games as part of this worthy cause...[more]
01.28.12 - Lead slips away at
end for Falcons
Prior
to taking over the lead in the game at 76-75
with 1:00 left in the second half, Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College had only been ahead of the
Cerritos College men's basketball team, 18-17
with 12:21 left in the first half. But once they
took the lead, the Beavers were able to hold on
and defeated the Falcons, 80-77 in a South Coast
Conference game at Gahr High School on Saturday
night. The loss dropped Cerritos to 9-13,
overall and 1-7 in SCC play, while they have
five games remaining. On Wednesday, the team
will travel to Pasadena City College for a 7:00
p.m. start.
Although the Falcons led for the majority of the
game, their advantage was never more than eight
points (51-43) with 17:16 left in the second
half after a jumper by sophomore forward
Darius
Williams (Long Beach Jordan HS).
But the Beavers (7-14, 2-6) continued to hang
around and finally pulled ahead on a three-point
play by Josh Chatman, 76-75. A pair of free
throws by Randall Harris II with 30.0 seconds
left were followed by two more free throws from
Steven Hester with 12.9 seconds left to seal the
victory...[more]
01.25.12 - Cerritos drops
conference game to Mt. SAC
After picking up their first
conference win of the season last Saturday, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team dropped a
27-point decision to Mt. San Antonio College in
a South Coast Conference game on Thursday. The
85-58 setback dropped the Falcons record to 9-12
overall and 1-6 in the SCC with six games
remaining in the regular season. The team will
now host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on
Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Gahr High School...[more]
01.21.12 - Falcons use fast
start to record win
While
they have been on the wrong side of a slow start
in the last several weeks, the Cerritos College
men's basketball team turned the tables on ECC
Compton Center in their South Coast Conference
crossover game at Gahr High School on Saturday
night. Coming out with a hot shooting hand, the
Falcons blazed out to a 37-11 lead through the
first 12:27 of the first half and finished with
an 81-70 win, snapping their five-game losing
streak. The win by Cerritos gives them their
first conference victory (1-5), while they are
now 9-11 overall. The team will travel to Mt.
San Antonio College on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m.
conference crossover game.
The Falcons drained their open looks against the
Tartars (7-13, 0-5) in the first half and shot
17-of-36 from the field, with seven of those
baskets coming from three-point range. Sophomore
guards Kierre
Beverly (Long Beach Millikan
HS/Navarro (TX) CC) and
Jeremy Chadwell (Downey Calvary
Chapel HS) each hit a pair of three-pointers to
get them out to their big lead...[more]
01.18.12 - Another early-game
deficit results in loss
In the last several games, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team has
fallen behind by huge deficits early in the
game, which has forced the team to push the
tempo of the game to try and get back to within
striking distance. It was no different on
Wednesday, as the Falcons fell behind host El
Camino College, 20-3 after the first 8:34 of the
game. Although the Falcons played fairly even
with the Warriors (11-6, 2-3) in the second
half, they result was an 89-63 South Coast
Conference South Division setback. The loss was
the fifth in a row for Cerritos, who are now 0-5
in the division and 8-11 on the year. They will
now host ECC Compton Center at 7:00 p.m. on
Saturday at Gahr High School.
Shooting a meager 29.2% from the field in the
first half was the major culprit in the team's
insurmountable deficit, while El Camino was a
respectable 48.6% over the first 20 minutes of
the game. Mixed in those numbers was a 1-for-11
performance from three-point range and 10
turnovers...[more]
01.14.12 - Cerritos rally
comes up short
Over
the first 13 minutes of their South Coast
Conference game, the Cerritos College men's
basketball team got off to their worst start of
the season, as they were trailing Los Angeles
Southwest College, 33-9. Things looked bleak for
the Falcons, until a rally in both the first and
second halves got them as close as 68-65 with
2:00 minutes left in the game. That would be as
close as they'd get to the Cougars, who handed
Cerritos their fourth loss in a row, 75-69 to
drop the Falcons to 8-10 overall and 0-4 in SCC
play. The team will get another shot at their
first conference win of the season when
they travel to El Camino College for a 7:00 p.m.
conference game on Wednesday.
The comeback started before the end of the first
half, as the Falcons started launching
three-pointers, receiving four in the final four
minutes to trail, 44-30 at intermission.
Sophomore guard
Anthony
Scott (Dominguez HS), who got
the team to within 68-65 with a three-pointer with
2:00 left in the game, scored the team's first nine
points of the second half. Trailing by as many as 22
points in the second half (56-34 with 15:38 left),
Cerritos eventually worked their way to within eight
points (64-56) when sophomore
Dominique
Kilgore (Cerritos HS) scored
off a turnover. Kilgore and sophomore
Darius
Williams (Long Beach Jordan HS)
both netted a pair of free throws to make the score,
66-62 with 2:53 remaining...[more]
01.11.12 - Last-chance shot
does not go in for Falcons
Trailing by a point with 17.1 seconds left in
the game, the Cerritos College men's basketball
team called timeout to try for the game-winning
shot in their South Coast Conference game at Los
Angeles Harbor College on Wednesday night. With
the clock running down, freshman guard
Victor Jones (Lakewood HS)
found three Seahawk players collapsed around him
after he chose to drive to the basket. His shot
hit the front rim, and the rebound was knocked
into the hands of LA Harbor's Tyler Nelson, who
ran out the remainder of the clock for a 49-48
final score. The loss dropped the Falcons to 8-9
on the season and 0-3 in the South Coast
Conference South Division, while LA Harbor
improved to 11-6 and 1-2. Cerritos, which has
now lost six games this season by four points or
less, will look for their first conference win
at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday when they host Los
Angeles Southwest College...[more]
01.06.12 - Shooting does in
Cerritos in conference loss
It wasn't the kind of shooting
performance Cerritos College men's basketball
head coach
Russ
May was looking for in their South Coast
Conference game at East Los Angeles College on
Friday. May watched his Falcons connect on just
2-of-28 three-pointers and only 30% from the
field, as the team dropped a 64-54 decision to
even their record to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in
conference play. They will play their sixth
straight road game on Wednesday when they
face host Los Angeles Harbor College at 6:00
p.m. on Wednesday...[more]
01.04.12 - Falcons miss
chances to win game
With several opportunities to
open South Coast Conference play with a win on
Wednesday night against rival Long Beach City
College, the Cerritos College men's basketball
team was unable to capitalize on any of them and
suffered a 64-61 overtime loss. The Falcons, who
dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in SCC play, will
travel to East Los Angeles College on Friday for
a 6:00 p.m. conference game.
ng, 57-51 with 3:19 left in regulation, the
Falcons shut down the Vikings (4-10, 1-0) for
the remainder of the second half. After
sophomore guard
Anthony Scott (Dominguez HS) pulled the Falcons even at 57 with 1:23 left in regulation, the Falcons were in position to win the game. However, sophomore forward
Willie Edwards (Moreno Valley HS) missed a potential game-winning shot with :34 seconds left in regulation and then turned the ball over with three seconds left, sending the contest to overtime...[more]
