After a close first half against Ventura College in
their non-conference game on Friday, the Cerritos
College men's basketball team saw the Pirates pull away
for a 73-59 victory. The loss was the third in a row for
the Falcons, who fell to 3-5 on the year, while Ventura
improved to 9-2. The team will look to end their losing
streak on Thursday when they open the Rio Hondo
Tournament with a 1:00 p.m. game against West Los
Angeles College.
Keeping the Falcons close in the first half was freshman
forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS), who scored
14 of his team-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes
and also finished the game with six rebounds and three
steals. Cerritos fell behind 12-4 before a basket by
freshman guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) with 14:45 left in
the first half ended that skid. The game was tied 33-33
before halftime, but Ventura scored the final four
points heading into the locker room. Riding the
22-point, 16-rebound performance of Danny Tavares, the
Pirates pulled ahead in the second half and posted the
14-point win.
Carpenter
finished with 13 points and four assists, while freshman
guard Clyde
Thomas (Long Beach Jordan HS) came off
the bench to finish with 11 points. Freshman forward
DeAndre
Ferguson (Lynwood HS) added six points
and a team-high seven rebounds, with freshman center
Brandon Bell
(St. John Bosco HS) pulling down five boards. |
