The Cerritos College men's basketball team snapped a
three-game losing streak in the first round of the
Cal-Nevada Transportation Tournament by defeating West
Los Angeles College in the first round, 76-59 on
Thursday. After a loss to Irvine Valley College in the
semi-finals, 58-53 on the next day, the Falcons came
back to post a 62-48 win over Los Angeles Harbor College
to take third place. Heading into their South Coast
Conference cross-over game at Compton College on Tuesday
at 7:30 p.m., Cerritos is now 5-6 on the year.
In the opener against West LA, freshman
guard
Demetrius Tuner (King-Drew HS)
drained 10-of-17 shots, including five three-pointers,
to lead all scorers with 25 points. It was a low-scoring
first half (28-20) with the Falcons on top, but the pace
picked up in the second half, much to the delight of
Cerritos, who likes to push the ball up court.
In
addition to the offense provided by Turner, freshman
forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood HS) connected on 7-of-13 shots and
added 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Both
freshman forward
DeAndre
Ferguson (Lynwood HS) and freshman
guard
Arthur Clark (Martin Luther Kings HS)
each chipped in with eight points, while Ferguson also
had eight rebounds. Freshman guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) dished off a
team-high five assists to go along with his four points
and four rebounds.
Jones
led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds in the
loss to Irvine Valley, who shot 43% from the field in
the second half, compared to just 30% for the Falcons.
Clark had 12 points and five rebounds, while Ferguson
chipped in with 10 points and five boards. The Lasers
used balance in their comeback victory, as only one
player scored in double-figures, while two others had
nine points and another added eight.
Turner
found his hot hand in the win over LA Harbor, netting
7-of-15 shots and also hit four three-pointers to finish
with a game-high 22 points. The Falcons turned up the
heat on defense, forcing 25 Seahawk turnovers, while
committing just nine of their own. Cerritos put up 32
three-pointers in the game and made just nine, but they
came from six different players. Jones contributed 13
points and four rebounds, with sophomore guard
Lawrence
Robinson (Long Beach Poly HS)
coming off the bench to contribute seven points and
three assists in a good all-around game. |
