Freshman forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood HS) scored a game-high 24 points and
pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Cerritos College
men's basketball team to a 66-58 non-conference game at
The Aviary against College of the Canyons on Wednesday
night. With the win, the Falcons snapped a three-game
losing streak and are now 6-9 on the season, while the
Cougars fell to 12-4. The team will now move on to the
Allan Hancock Tournament, where they will open against
Bakersfield College on December 28 at 3:30 p.m.
In the first half of the game against
Canyons, the Falcons fell behind 12-5 with 14:28 left
before they started to make their move. After a pair of
free throws by Jones tied the game at 22-22 with 7:20
remaining, he scored the next two baskets for Cerritos
to keep the game tied. But it was a pair of
three-pointers in the span of 11 seconds by freshman
guard
Andre
Zeumault (Garfield,
WA HS) that put the team up by six points (32-26)
with 3:26 remaining in the first half and gave them a
lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the
game.
Jones accounted
for 17 of his points in the first half, as the Falcons
led, 43-31. In the second half, both teams struggled
from the field, but Cerritos saw their lead start to
diminish to where it was just a 56-55 advantage with
3:20 left after two free throws by College of the
Canyon's Everett Bryson. A free throw by freshman guard
Jerrell Elder
(Long Beach Millikan HS) and a bank shot off
the glass by Zeumault pushed the lead to four points
(60-56). The Cougars tried to get back into the game
three points at a time and missed their final seven
treys, while Cerritos continued to grab the rebounds and
get fouled. Elder made three of four to help seal the
game for the Falcons.
On the night,
freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner (King-Drew
HS) added 11 points, four rebounds and three
assists, while Zeumault finished with eight points. On
the boards, sophomore guard
Lawrence
Robinson (Long Beach Poly HS)
pulled down six, while newcomer
Ainas Lazdauskas (Lithuania) added
five points and five rebounds in his first game of the
year. |
