With an opportunity to snap Long
Beach City College's 10-game winning streak and put
themselves right back in the hunt for a shot at the
South Coast Conference South Division title, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team was unable to
find an answer for a couple of hot Viking hands in
the second half.
Viking forward Chris Brown scored on an offensive
rebound and lay-up with :03 left in the second half
to break an 85-85 tie and lead Long Beach City to an
89-85 victory at Long Beach on Friday night. The
loss drops Cerritos to 9-17 on the season and 2-3 in
divisional play, while the Vikings improved to 18-10
overall and 5-0 in the division. The Falcons will
now host Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday at
7:30 p.m.
After freshman forward
DeAndre
Ferguson (Lynwood HS) drained two
free throws with :33 seconds left to tie the game at
85-85, Long Beach City held the ball for the final
shot. After a miss by guard Deon Tresvant, Brown was
there to get the rebound and scored to give LBCC the
lead. On the inbound pass by the Falcons after they
called time out, Ferguson overthrew his intended
teammate and the Vikings tacked on two Tresvant free
throws to secure the win.
The lead changed hands 17 times over the course of
the game, while there were 15 ties, which
demonstrated how much better the Falcons played than
in their first meeting, an 86-66 Long Beach win.
With 11:40 to go in the second half, Cerritos held a
66-61 lead after Ferguson scored two of his
team-high 25 points, along with leading the squad
with 12 rebounds. But Eric Williams came right back
with a three-pointer for the Vikings, while Tresvant
was a terror on the floor all night, as he led LBCC
with 25 points, while Williams added 24.
