With no chance at
advancing to the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College
men's basketball team found themselves very
relaxed as they entered their South Coast
Conference South Division home game against
Los Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday
night. The Falcons, well aware of the
offensive exploits of the Cougars as of
late, showed some offensive explosiveness of
their own, as they posted a 94-75 win to
improve their season mark to 11-17 overall
and 4-3 in the division. The Cougars dropped
to 16-13 and 3-4. Cerritos will close out
their season this Friday at El Camino
College in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
From the early stages of
the game, the Falcons came out shooting from
the outside and netted eight first-half
three-pointers in cruising to a 44-26 lead
at intermission. Freshman guard
Demetrius Turner (King-Drew
HS), who can shoot from anywhere on the
floor, led the team with 18 points in the
first half and finished with a game-high 30
points, along with three rebounds.
Cerritos shot an amazing
67.9% from the field in the win and dished
out 31 assists in their 38 baskets, as they
were able to break the Cougars press. When
it didn't work, the Falcons turned the ball
over, so it was an all-or-nothing result
every time they held possession of the ball.
The major recipient of the press break was
freshman forward
DeAndre Ferguson (Lynwood
HS), who scored 16 of his 18 points in
the second half, with all of them being
high-percentage lay-ups. In addition to his
18 points, Ferguson also pulled down nine
rebounds to lead the team.
It was a 30-point lead in
the second half, as the Cougars continued to
live and die by the three-pointer, as they
made just 6-of-30 on the night. As for
Turner, he connected on 11-of-15 shots in
the game, with five of them from three-point
range, while freshman guard
Andre Zeumault (Garfield,
WA HS) added four treys and also had 18
points. Leading the team in distributing the
ball was freshman forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS),
who shared the team lead with seven assists
and also added eight points, while freshman
guard
Jerell Elder (Long Beach
Millikan HS) also passed off seven
assists. Freshman guard
Xavier Carpenter (Carson HS)
chipped in with six assists, seven points
and seven rebounds, while freshman forward
Keith Canzater (Martin
Luther King HS) came off the bench and
dished off five assists in the win.
