The Cerritos College men’s basketball
team appeared to be putting together a solid two halves
of basketball in their South Coast Conference cross-over
home game against Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday
night. The Falcons, who have been inconsistent for an
entire game for the majority of the season, slipped
again after holding a 55-49 lead in the second half and
dropped an 80-72 decision. The loss put the team at 6-12
on the year, while the Mounties improved to 12-7.
Next up for the Falcons is another conference cross-over
game, as they host East Los Angeles College at 7:30 p.m.
on Friday.
Freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner (King-Drew HS) hit a short jumper
with 10:04 left in the second half to give the Falcons a
56-49 lead after trailing by as many as seven points
(47-40) just four minutes earlier. But, Mountie guards
Donte Smith and Omid Sadat each netter three pointers
and put the game at a 57-57 tie with 8:19 left.
Cerritos did get a trey by sophomore guard
Lawrence
Robinson (Long Beach Poly HS) with 7:57
left to give the team a brief 60-57 advantage, but
another three-pointer by Smith with 6:15 left put the
Mounties up for good, as they went on to post the
eight-point win.
It was the hot shooting of Smith in the second half that
did in the Falcons, as he scored 22 of his game-high 33
points in the final 20 minutes, while Jimmy House was a
model of consistency, as he added 23 points and 10
rebounds.
Robinson did his best to get the Falcons back into the
game, draining a trio of second-half three pointers, but
the team went cold in the final five minutes. Turner led
the team with 20 points on 8-of-22 shooting, while
Robinson (12 points, three steals) and freshman forward
Travele
Jones (Inglewood HS), who added 12 points
and a team-high 10 rebounds, also played well. Freshman
guard Jerell
Elder (Long Beach Millikan HS) added 10
points off the bench, while freshman point guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) did a solid job
directing the offense and handed out a career-high 10
assists. |
