For the second game in a row, the
Cerritos College men’s basketball team saw a second half
lead disappear, winding up in a loss. Against Mt. San
Antonio on Wednesday, it was a six-point lead with 10:00
minutes left that resulted in an eight point loss. On
Friday, the Falcons, saw a 19-point (33-14) first half
lead with 3:49 remaining finally get away with less than
a minute remaining in the game against East Los Angeles
College at home on Friday night.
Cerritos had a chance to take the
lead with 5.4 seconds left, but settled for overtime
where they suffered a 78-75 loss. The setback, their
fourth in a row and seventh in their last eight games,
dropped the Falcons to 6-13 on the year, while the
Huskies improved to 4-11. The team will now travel to
Los Angeles City for another South Coast Conference
cross-over game against the Cubs at 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesday.
The Falcons were having their way
with East LA, who kept putting up three-pointers, with
no result, as they missed their first 12 attempts. But,
before the end of the first half, they had cut their
deficit to just nine points (38-29) and slowly worked
their way back into contention.
Then, with 31.2 seconds remaining in
regulation, Cesar Gerardo nailed a trey from the
baseline to give the Huskies their first lead of the
game at 67-66. Holding the ball for the final shot,
Falcon forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood HS) was fouled with 5.4 seconds left.
After netting the first attempt, which tied the game, he
missed the second to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Falcons took
a quick 71-67 lead after freshman guard
Jerell Elder
(Long Beach Millikan HS) scored two buckets by
driving to the basket. A basket, followed by a
three-pointer from Emilio Chavez gave the Huskies a lead
they would not relinquish, as Chavez netted another in
the extra period and finished the game with 17 points
off the bench, including eight in overtime.
In the first half, Cerritos filled
the nets with seven three-pointers, while the Huskies
finally found their groove and made 12 of their final 21
attempts from three-point range. Daniel Vazquez led the
team with 21 points, which included six three-pointers.
Leading the Falcons was freshman
guard
Demetrius Turner (King-Drew HS), who
scored a game-high 24 points off the bench and hit four
three-pointers. Freshman guard
Andre
Zeumault (Garfield, WA HS) added 14
points and also made four treys, while Elder finished
with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Also adding
11 points was Jones, to go along with seven boards,
while freshman guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) dished out six
assists. |
