The Cerritos College men's basketball
team played their South Coast Conference game on
Wednesday night like Dr. Jeykl and Mr. Hyde. In the
first half, the Falcons opened up a 43-36 lead against
the Cougars at halftime and seemed to be able to handle
the half-court trap applied by LA Southwest. In the
second half, Cerritos turned the ball over 21 times
(they had 32 on the night) and missed the final shot of
the game in a 93-90 loss. The setback dropped the
Falcons to 7-16 on the year and 1-2 in divisional play,
while the Cougars are now 14-11 overall and 1-2.
Cerritos will now host El Camino College on Friday at
7:30 p.m.
Down 82-75 with 5:06 left in the
second half, the Falcons outscored the Cougars 10-4 over
the next 2:14, thanks to a pair of three-pointers from
freshman guard
Andre
Zeumault (Garfield, WA HS). It was a
90-87 LASW lead with 1:06 remaining after an offensive
rebound and basket by Eric Flournoy, who also converted
a free throw to make it 91-87. Freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner (King-Drew HS) drained a
three-pointer from the baseline with 26.7 seconds left
to make it 91-90 and then the Falcons were able to steal
the ball.
With a chance to take the lead with a basket, freshman
guard Jerell
Elder (Long Beach Millikan HS) was called
for a charge with 9.2 seconds left. After a quick foul
against the Cougars Jason McKinney and two converted
free throws, Cerritos had one last chance to send the
game into overtime. Turner was able to get off a
three-pointer, but it rattled off the rim and the
Falcons dropped another game in which they held a
double-digit lead.
Cerritos had no answer for Cougar
guard Chris Smith, who lit the nets up for 33 points,
with 22 of them coming in the first half. On the night,
LASW had four players score in double-figures, while the
Falcons were led by freshman forward
DeAndre
Ferguson (Lynwood HS), who had 21 points
and nine rebounds. Zeumault did finish with 19 points,
including four three-pointers, while Turner added 13
points and five boards. Elder came off the bench to add
12 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while
freshman forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood HS) contributed 12 points 10 rebounds
and six assists. |
