In
their last two South Coast Conference South Division
games, the Cerritos College men's basketball team has
been able to put up big numbers. Although they suffered
a 93-90 loss to Los Angeles Southwest College on
Wednesday, the Falcons came right back and put 89 points
on the board against El Camino College in an 89-57 win
on Friday night at home. The win evens the team's
divisional record at 2-2, while they are now 8-16 on the
season. Cerritos will look to keep up their offensive
prowess when they host Pasadena City College on
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a cross-over divisional game.
In the first
half, the Falcons jumped out to an early 16-5 lead, but
saw the Warriors work their way back into the game and
got to within 28-27 with 2:56 remaining in the first
half. But before intermission, Cerritos out-scored the
Warriors, 8-2, with a three-pointer from freshman guard
Jerell Elder
(Long Beach Millikan HS) being the first of many
daggers the team would inflict on El Camino. The
Warriors tried to stay in the game with the outside
shooting of Kelly Hubbard, who scored 13 of his
team-high 21 points in the first half.
The lead started
to swell as the second half progressed, with freshman
guard
Andre Zeumault (Garfield, WA HS) lighting
up the scoreboard with a trio of three-pointers in as
many attempts, which gave the Falcons a 17-point lead
(56-37). In addition to Zeumault, freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner (King-Drew HS) also drained three
three-pointers in the second half, while the team hit
seven in the game.
Turner led the
team with 21 points, with 15 of them coming in the
second half, to go along with seven rebounds, while
Zeumault added 13 points. Elder came off the bench to
contribute his 16 points, as well as seven rebounds
(five offensive), five assists and three steals.
Freshman forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood HS), who thrives on the up-tempo
style, scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half,
while freshman guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) and freshman
forward
DeAndre Ferguson (Lynwood HS) combined
for 15 points and 12 rebounds. |
