After a slow and sluggish
first half in the South Coast Conference cross-over
game against Pasadena City College, the Cerritos
College men's basketball team was able to come from
behind in the second half to pull out a 55-47 home
win on Wednesday night. With the win, the Falcons
are now 9-16 overall, while the Lancers dropped to
6-18. Cerritos will resume divisional play on Friday
when they travel to cross-town rival Long Beach City
College for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
The Falcons continued to look to the three-pointer
for their offense and came up empty almost every
time, as they trailed, 21-18 at intermission. After
making just one of their first 17 attempts in the
game, they hit on consecutive attempts in the second
half to turn 42-37 deficit into only a 44-43 hole.
Freshman guard
Xavier
Carpenter (Carson HS) netted a
trey, followed by a baseline three-pointer from
freshman guard
Andre
Zeumault (Garfield, WA HS).
The Lancers, who turned the ball over on four
straight possessions, saw their lead evaporate for
the remainder of the game after Carpenter connected
on two free throws with 3:51 remaining to give the
Falcons a 45-44 advantage.
In the waning moments Cerritos made 5-of-6 free
throws to secure the win, with the team making
12-of-17 in the second half.
Freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner (King-Drew HS) made
nine of his team-high 11 points in the second half,
while Carpenter scored all nine of his in the second
half. The duo of Zeumault and freshman forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS)
each added 10 points, while Jones led the team with
eight rebounds. Lancer forward Alex Finley led all
scorers with 16 points.
