The Cerritos College men's basketball
team was unable to rebound from a slow first half in
their non-conference game against Palomar College on
Friday, which was played at MiraCosta College. The
Falcons saw their season record drop to 1-1 on the year
after their 87-76 setback. The team will now enter the
Irvine Valley Tournament, and will open against Mt San
Jacinto on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
In the first 20 minutes of the game,
the Falcons fell behind 41-30 against the Comets,
despite shooting 53% (15-of-28) from the field. It was
their free throw shooting, where they made just 7-of-15,
that hurt them the most, while they committed 31
turnovers in the game. Freshman forward
DeAndre
Ferguson
(Lynwood
HS)
did score 12 first-half points, but was limited to just
one free throw in the second half. He also added eight
rebounds and four steals in the loss. Additionally,
freshman guard
Demetrius
Turner
(King-Drew
HS)
scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second half,
while he also pulled down six rebounds, with five coming
on the offensive end.
Palomar took advantage of their solid
outside shooting to counter any comeback attempts by the
Falcons, as they hit on 13 three-pointers, while
Cerritos was 2-for-10 from beyond the arch.
Freshman guard
Clyde Thomas
(Long
Beach Jordan HS)
added nine points and five steals off the bench, with
the trio of freshman guard
Jerell Elder
(Long
Beach Millikan HS),
freshman forward
Travele Jones
(Inglewood
HS)
and freshman center
Brandon Bell
(St.
John Bosco HS)
all scoring seven points. Bell also added seven
rebounds, while Elder led the team with three assists. |
